general impression - 5/25/2008
I am a 63 year old retired NYS employee who lived and worked in Suffolk County, Long Island,NY until recently relocating to Tucson, AZ....I still have some family on Long Island, and I can't say it was a bad place to grow up, however, the cost of living was always high and I often worked two jobs to afford to stay there. I owned a home and the property taxes were high, as well as utilities. I worked so hard that I didn't really enjoy much leisure time. The minuses about Long Island were the heavy traffic, nasty drivers, lots of rain and humidity, icy roads in winter, etc. The pluses were the beaches, LI sound, some decent friendly people and co-workers, pretty and green neighborhoods, good police presence and good schools. Now that I moved with my wife to Tucson, AZ, I am so very glad we relocated. It is beautiful here, with mountains and less stress, good weather, lovely scenery, and all of the amenities we had on Long Island, except maybe the Italian food here is not as good, and

Crime on the rise in S. Arizona - 5/12/2008
because of drugs, illegal immigration, high rate of poverty in Tucson compared to the rest of the state, and a very low service-level economy combined with a cost-of-living that is not as low as expected considering the wages offered here. Crime is not restricted to the "bad" parts of town, although they are higher there. Everyone is susceptible to burglaries. Although the climate is nice here, I would not recommend it as a retirement town for senior citizens because the high crime rate is not comfortable for older

Parks & Recreation - 5/11/2008
I love Tucson for the activities it has to offer, especially to seniors. The Parks & Recreation department offers as huge array of classes, the senior centers (+50) have free membership to well equipped facilities, and even include free access to pools and health clubs, yoga, tai chi, and many others -- in addition to all the other ativities typically offered in such centers. The UofA brings young people to town, and with them restaurants, music, and theatre. If you like to hike, the number trails is seemingly endless, and how many cities can offer snow an hour away, as it's 70+ balmy degrees in the

Tucson: Lack of Progressive Public Transit - 5/11/2008
Tucson has many wonderful things about it: the gorgeous desert colors and desert sunsets are unparalled. Plenty of sunshine. No humidity. Mountains galore. As far as its natural habitat, Tucson is alluring.
However, when it comes to urbanism Tucson flails. There has been a complete lack of planned infrastructure when it comes to public transit. For decades, ideas to build a light rail have been scrubbed. The SunTran buses are constantly 15-20 minutes late, while people are waiting out in the sun. The roads are in spotty condition. There are numerous bike paths, but people are afraid to use them because of the prolific SUV drivers.
It is because of these reasons, that I am choosing not to stay in

Great place to live! - 5/9/2008
I love Tucson. Yeah, it has its cons as well as pros, but so does every place else. I've lived in the Midwest and the Rocky Mountains most of my life and while I'm the type to be adaptable and like it wherever I live, I think I feel more at home here than most other places I've lived. So here are the pros and cons:
I love the weather--just use AC in the summer. You acclimatize to the 100+ temperatures in the summer. But if you're a polar bear, where 85 feels too hot, this is not the place for you unless you're very adaptable.
Housing--yeah, it seems too high after Missouri. It was a big gripe for us to have to pay more for a smaller (but newer) cookie cutter house in Tucson than our Colonial style in small town NW Missouri. But it's all comparative. Housing in Tucson is definitely cheaper than East or West coast, and equivalent to or cheaper than the other major Western and Southwestern cities (can't compare to small towns—decent housing is almost always

Tucson... Doomed by the Backward Thinking... - 3/24/2008
I've been in Tucson for almost 20 years, originally from St. Louis County. Great place if you hate freezing and as a hater of the extreme heat, you really do get used to the hot, hot summers (but not burning your hand on the steering wheel after your car has cooked in the sun).
But... the natives and backward liberals want to keep Tucson from growing although the city and surrounding Pima County are now over a million people, HELLO? McFly?!?!? It already has grown and will continue to grow! I've been to a lot of cities on a lot of states in this country and can think of no other metro area as big, spread out and as populated as Tucson that only HAS ONE MAJOR HIGHWAY SYSTEM because the backwards way of thinking is that if WE DON'T build the highways, TUCSON WON'T BECOME A LITTLE PHOENIX. Nope, we're already WORSE than a Little Phoenix--at least THEY pour concrete and asphalt to accommodate the thousands of people moving to AZ each month.
A recent stat showed

Looking for a change... - 3/13/2008
Tucson is a good place to live, however the city is rapidly growing and becoming over-populated, the traffic is getting worse, and crime is increasing. I miss the having four seasons, the summers are a little too hot for me. Tucson does have some of the best selections of dining, the night life is okay, and it you're an outdoors person theres plenty of bike and hiking
