Tucson, Arizona is a city located in the southern region of the state, known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, beautiful desert landscapes, and warm weather. It is also home to the University of Arizona and has a growing economy. With its unique characteristics, many people have chosen to call Tucson their home. To gain a better understanding of what it's like to live in Tucson, we will summarize and include excerpts from various user reviews on BestPlaces.net.

Cost of living - 11/19/2008
Hello there,

I want to point out how the cost of living has rised in Tucson, a lot of people from other places, from CA the most are making the economy suffer, less pay, less opportunities. How much do the make in CA anyway, that they take less pay than Tucsonians, CA is a much more expensive state, I don't get it. I just hope the politicians start working on how to get Tucson to the next level. Still love Tucson and hope friendly open minded people come and join our community, but we should keep gangsters Read More

Tucson - City of Enchantment - 10/4/2008
We are ex-New Yorkers who have been here 8 yrs and now can't imagine living anywhere else. Entertainment? Tucson Symphony Orchestra is world class, the Arizona Opera company is very good, there are many local professional live theater venues. Google "UA Presents" to see its many, many varied offerings. There are many adult educational opporunities. Many fine museums and art galleries. In fact, there aren't enough hours to do and see all we want to. Oh, and Sabino Canyon and the other national parks offer wonderful hiking trials for all skill levels, even casual walkers. Sking is available 25 miles away if one is so motivated. And even the hot summer days are okay.... that's the time to see movies in air-conditioned comfort 'cause it cools off in the evenings. 300+ days of sunshinea year sure beats shoveling Read More

Moving to Tucson?? - 10/2/2008
My wife and I lived in Tucson from 1999 through 2004. We made tons of friends and enjoyed the mountains and climate very much. But, in all fairness, much of what J, from the Midwest wrote above is very true. We eventually left after trying to find work in our professional fields. Most of the job market in Tucson is service industry that caters to the snowbirds. The largest employers are the University, the Air Force Base, and the Real Estate/Construction Industry. City Planners and City Elected Officials lack the expertise and knowledge to create a vibrant, low impact, diversified economy. The many failed attempts to revitalize the downtown area,is quite franly a joke that is often written about in the local newspapers. Many Tucsonians are Hispanic, and there is an unhealed resentment toward City leaders for having demolished a section of Tucson, displacing Hispanic families and tearing down older historic buildings in favor of an ugly modern City Administrative Building. In short, a Read More

Haven't been here long - 9/17/2008
While I haven't been in Tucson long, my basic impressions are very good, with some decided difficulties.

Having lived for the last 20 years in decidedly more metropolitan areas and abroad, Tucson seems far more culturally isolated. For that, there seems to be a very distinctive Tucson culture that is intimately connected with it's climate and geography. The downside is that it can seem a little provincial, like a small town minus the small town intimacy.

Work here is pretty limited it seems. My overall impression is that people who move here do so because they want to live in Tucson, and not to advance their careers or find new ones.

Once you get out of the city itself (which is not particularly attractive), it is beautiful. Truly Read More

If you have children & would like for them to have - 8/22/2008
If you are a retiree and can endure the heat Tucson is the place for you!...But if you have children and are thinking about thier education I suggest considering somewhere else. We rank as one of the lowest places for education, national test scores, etc... It is pitiful!! Very low expectations too! Most parents that I've encountered seem to only have aspirations of their children graduating high school let alone college. It seems to be the adopted mentality here. I think the heat goes to their heads! It's too hot in the summertime for kids to play outside (I'm talking 3rd degree burns if they fall on the ground) If you take a trip to the local zoo, you wind up spending about 45min. walking through the ENTIRE place & could possibly have heat stroke when you're through! There are a couple of neat museums for kids, however, it only takes about 1/2 hour till boredom overtakes you! (but the air conditioning is a Read More

Crime, Crime, Crime - 8/19/2008
I am moving! I have lived in this town for over 20 years. I live in one of the nicest historic neighborhoods. In the last 3 years my car has been stolen and broken into. My patio furniture taken off my porch in front of my eyes. My business located in a very nice commercial area was robbed and a family member was assaulted by a crack head robber in a Walgreens. All of this and I was told by the police that "they are over whelmed and that unless someone is killed not much will be done"
This town is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

The city needs money and yet it is incompetent and unfriendly to new businesses. It does not plan ahead with infrastructure therefore we have horrible roads and road conditions.

Lack of leadership - 7/23/2008
Tucson is a beautiful place to live! I love it here. Make no doubt about it, the Tucson area offers some of the most diverse scenery and activities in the country. The Sonoran Desert is uniquely beautiful in the Tucson region and gives the area it's distinctive flavor. Unfortunately, the city is far from perfect. The city has had numerous chances, (freeways, Rio Nuevo downtown redevelopment, annexations, etc) to become a model of urban redevelopment and healthy growth. It continues to shoot itself in the foot, year after year by electing myopic, neighborhood activist, "eco-freaks" to the city council. These people don't understand the concept of consensus, compromise or doing what is good for the entire area. They seem able to deal only with their own small neighborhood issues and largely ignore the larger need. Nimby's have controlled this council for the past 3 decades and it is an ugly scene. If you move to the area, I suggest that you move to Oro Valley, Green Valley or Read More
