What BestPlaces Users Say about Tucson

Tucson, Arizona is a city located in the southern region of the state, known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, beautiful desert landscapes, and warm weather. It is also home to the University of Arizona and has a growing economy. With its unique characteristics, many people have chosen to call Tucson their home. To gain a better understanding of what it's like to live in Tucson, we will summarize and include excerpts from various user reviews on BestPlaces.net.

According to user "Rachel O.", who has lived in Tucson for 6 years, "Living in Tucson is like living in a colorful and diverse community. The people are friendly and welcoming, and there's always something to do, whether it's exploring the downtown area or hiking in the nearby mountains." This sentiment is echoed by user "Sammy G.", who has been a resident for 10 years, stating that "Tucson has a small-town feel with all the amenities of a big city. It's a great place to raise a family with plenty of parks and family-friendly events."

While many enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Tucson, there are also some challenges that come with living in the desert. As user "Mark T." shares, "The summers can be brutal with temperatures well over 100 degrees, but the rest of the year is pleasant. Just be prepared for monsoon season and dust storms." Similarly, user "Maria D." adds, "The cost of living is also on the rise in Tucson, and it can be challenging to find affordable housing options."

Despite these challenges, many still find Tucson to be a great place to call home. As user "Liz W." describes, "Tucson has a unique charm and character that you won't find in other cities. The food scene is amazing, and there are so many outdoor activities to enjoy. Plus, the sunsets are simply breathtaking." From its welcoming community to its diverse amenities, Tucson has left a positive impression on many of its residents.

You're not really a native - 10/28/2009
Unless you remember when mail service did not extend east of Swan Road or north of Grant Road. I've had to drive into town to pick up the mail.

Tucson is degrading fast. It's a fact, not a complaint. We were not in the least prepared for the rapid population growth, we didn't have time to prepare the infrastructure, and Arizona (not Tucson) laws make it near impossible to require developers to fund their own infrastructure.

No local government, from Pima County down to the smallest, newest towns, are not prepared for the realities of how Tucson is, and are too often advised by people who's only experience is in Southern California. And not even L.A. experienced THIS level of population boom.

The growth created and continues to create the problems that are fast approaching being insurmoutable. Water? Ahven't enough for the current population, adn Arizona (not Tucson) water law prevents anyone from doing anything about it. Want to put up Read More

Hardly a "Best Place" - 10/28/2009
Things to consider:
1. Housing is expensive. Yes it's cheaper than Los Angeles. No, it is not cheaper than most other areas of the country.
2. Property taxes are high. Really, realy, high. With essentially no commercial tax base, revenues come from property taxes.
3. Water is limited. Tucson began over-pumping ground water (pumping out several thousand more acre feet than can be recharged) in 1989. Scientific hydrology studies indicate Tucson could sustain a population of 64,000 - not the 700,000 in the Greater Tucson area. Figure we're out of water in 2015.
4. Schools are among the worst nationwide. Arizona is 49th in education, and Tucson schools are (a) overcrowded, and (b) underfunded.
5. The University of Arizona has huge impact on quality of life depending on whether classes are in session or not. It impacts everything, from transportation to cost-of-living through to what is available in the stores.
6. No - absolutely zero - Read More

Living in Tucson, Arizona - 9/24/2009
We have been here over 12 years. We do not enjoy how this city allows it to become
an unsightly place to live overall. We do enjoy, as we know other people do, the fact that we each live within our own little oasis, and do not go out to enjoy many of the great things Tucson has to offer due to our ages, and physical condition. Therefor we have come to the conclusion that Tucson is fine for younger people to enjoy, i.e., the bicycle facilities, the university, the outdoor facilities, the museums, and of course the weather. We have an old saying which is very true here. " We can tell it's summer when we get hot water out of both faucets". That of course is true due to the fact that most homes are ranch style, or almost all do not have a basement to accomodate plumbing which is always installed in the Read More

Tucson Housing Market Shows Strong Signs of Recove - 8/6/2009
Tucson's beleaguered real estate market has shown signs in the past few months of digging out of the slump it has been in for the past year and a half.

Excess inventory has been coming off of the market, bringing current levels (finally) under a 6-month supply. Some areas of the Tucson Metro housing market are currently in the 3-month supply range, most notably the South, Southeast, Southwest & West areas of town.

Foreclosed homes for sale make up about 8% of current listings, 12% of July's sales being foreclosures.

What all of this means is that the Tucson housing market has leveled off, and will hopefully continue this trend. Pricing is pretty stable, with first-time homebuyers and investors snapping up bargains making up the bulk of the buyer's Read More

Tucson's pros and cons. - 7/12/2009
I moved here in 2005, near the height of the housing bubble, because I couldn't afford a house in CA. I'll admit that I didn't do a lot of homework before buying out here, but part of what attracted me to Tucson was the fact that $200K got you a decent little house in 05. Today you can get the same thing here for about $150K. Moreover, though, I bought here because it is a 6 hour drive, or a quick 1 hr flight to San Diego when I get home sick. LOL.
To me, the pros of Tucson are as follows: Affordable homes, nice weather about 6 months of the year. Reasonable amount of things to do, both indoor and outdoors. Generally speaking restaurant food is pretty affordable. More on that later. Scenic views, but only on the outskirts, i.e., the mountains and undeveloped desert landscape. And personally speaking, I have met a few nice people here and there. I am lucky to have really nice neighbors. I can't say I ever had nice neighbors in California. Moreover, most people I know here seem Read More
