I was born in Paso. When I was a kid, it was all dry dirt farmers & pickup trucks. Now its all about the wine business & Beemers...
Its having growing pains, & water table issues. The schools were better in the past, but still OK. Too much gang influence, IMO...
The weather is wonderful more times than not. A little hot in the summer (but it does cool off in the evenings thanks to the breeze coming down from Monterrey), a little cold in the winter. I'm a golfer, and I play year around. But I do kick some ice off the cleats in the early winter rounds.
All and all, Paso is wonderful.(pretty expendive, but wonderful) But to be honest, I'm looking for a little smaller, slower paced place to

I moved to the area in August of 07 to teach, and am NOW living in Central CA...AGAIN:( Could NOT afford to live "in the neighborhood" on my own salary (@ 60K), and I just didn't find it "worthy" of "paying for the privilege to live there" (as a single income household)! There seemed to be this "expectation" to receive T O P DOLLAR housing prices that were challenging to one's intelligence to "accept"!!! (Think: The Emperor's New Clothes...)! It's not much MUCH cheaper than coastal areas, without the view... Plan on making AT LEAST 70K to make things happen, and good luck if you're looking to find that locally - the industry there seems to rely M A I N L Y on tourism. So - I couldn't get more with more than 10 years of professional experience, and a graduate degree; if you DO qualify, then "Welcome to Paso Robles!" Happy

I live in Paso Robles, California. It is a wonderful place to live and retire.
San Luis Obispo County has several small towns and cities. Those towns that are on, or close to the beach have a much milder micro climate than towns only a few miles away. This is predominatly the influence of of the sea air. Paso Robles gets almost no influence from the ocean, can freeze in Winter, and has many days over 100 degrees in Summer.
If you are thinking about living near the west coast, be aware that the climate next to the ocean may be substantially different than the climate a very few miles inland.
The Sunset Western Garden Book has devided the Western coastal states into 24 categories, and precisely identified what climate you can expect in any part of the Western States. With 1 being the harshest/coldest climate, Paso Robles gets a 7 and the beach cities 45 minutes away get 15, 16, and 17.

Moved here in 1977 from the Los Angeles Basin, and I have never felt like stopping everyone else from following me here, but they did, and it seems like those moving here lately want to change Paso Robles into what they left behind. If you like the liberal brie, and wine crowd, phoney Hollywood types, and San Fransisco Values, this is becoming your place. You had better bring money though, local work pays low, and housing, and taxes have gone through the roof. Some long time residents are lining their pockets, and others are leaving. Why I am leaving Paso Robles - 3/24/2008
My parents are buried here, and I raised my son (single father- mom left)here. I am convinced that I could not have raised him as well anywhere else in the nation. He is going to pursue his masters, and is going back up to Idaho, where he took his minor. The cost of living, and the "gentrafication" of Paso Robles has soured him on this area, and he took his major at Sacramento State, where he became disenchanted with California.
I have no brothers, or sisters, so he is my only immediate family. Although I basically own my house, we are not a wealthy family, and I cannot afford to buy him a house here, nor can he afford one.
If you come with money, welcome. If you expect to make it here, good luck!
Retirement here would be great, if you have a spouse, or children who live close, but this isn't the place for working families.Too bad, the school is very good, and the opportunities for extracuricular activites are the best.Only wealthy need
