Redlands people think they are a cut above the local riff raff & by standards of the county (San Bernardino) they are. Great schools, libraries, a university, diversity in restaurants, lots of renovated Victorian homes, a free outdoor concert at a greek theater that has professional performers every summer, new shopping centers, a cineplex etc.The town is growing like every other metropolitan area, so what was once a sleepy university town is caving into urban sprawl, but probably not to the degree of many other comparable S. Calif towns. If you don't have to commute or ever get on a S Calif freeway, it is great to live here. But don't forget the summers are long and hot in the inland Calif valleys (even in northern Calif) & the smog east of L.A. which is where Redlands is located is bad like it is everywhere in S.
