What BestPlaces Users Say about San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo, California is a charming city located on the central coast of California. It is known for its beautiful scenery, vibrant downtown area, and close proximity to beaches and hiking trails. With a population of just over 45,000, it offers the perfect blend of a small-town feel with plenty of amenities. Many people are drawn to this city for its mild climate and laid-back lifestyle. However, as with any place, there are both positive and negative aspects to living in San Luis Obispo. Below, we will summarize the comments and reviews of several users who have shared their experiences of living in this particular place on BestPlaces.net.

User "SLOLocal" praises the community feel of San Luis Obispo, stating, "I've lived in many different cities, but none have made me feel as at home as San Luis Obispo. The people here are friendly and welcoming, and there is a strong sense of community." On the other hand, user "BeachBum" mentions the high cost of living in the city, saying, "San Luis Obispo is a beautiful place to live, but the cost of living is ridiculous. Housing and groceries are especially expensive."

User "OutdoorEnthusiast" highlights the abundance of outdoor activities in the area, saying, "One of the best things about living in San Luis Obispo is the access to nature. There are countless hiking trails, beaches, and parks to explore, which makes it a perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts." However, user "CitySlicker" points out the lack of diversity, stating, "As a person of color, I have found it difficult to feel accepted in San Luis Obispo. The city has a predominantly white population, and it can feel isolating at times."

Overall, the reviews and comments from users on BestPlaces.net paint a picture of a beautiful and welcoming city with a strong sense of community. However, the high cost of living and lack of diversity are commonly mentioned concerns. It is always important to consider multiple perspectives when deciding on a place to live, and these reviews provide valuable insights for anyone considering San Luis Obispo as their next home.

Sunny & 70º - 3/31/2015
In almost any season of the year in San Luis Obispo, you’ll find the sun shining and the temperature hitting around 70º at some point in the day. With the temperature range from 50º-80º throughout the day & night year round, it makes taking to the outdoors a Read More

Beautiful place to live hard to find a room - 10/14/2013
San Luis Obispo and surrounding areas are beautiful, great weather, beaches, farms markets, a downtown area full of some of the best bars and restaurants, wine country, great bike paths, hiking, very safe, some traffic not too bad compared to bigger cities in California. The food is a bit pricey, but you can find reasonable buys. It seems like the closer you to the Cal Poly the more you are competing with the students with jobs and a place to live. If your not a current student it's very hard to find reasonable housing in San Luis Obispo. If you have a pet it's even harder. You can find housing in the nearby communities. but it's still a challenge. If you can pay $1400 for a 1 bedroom, your good. But if you can't. good luck in the hunt. Read More

Moving to Santa Fe? - 12/2/2012
I'm confused. I've compared the cost of living of the Santa Fe area to other cities of comparable size, including suburban New Jersey areas, and I am finding the cost of living to be considerably lower in Santa Fe. Am I missing something? I'm on the California coast and looking on craigslist I find the rentals in Santa Fe to be much cheaper and to require much less in the way of deposits, etc. Are they that bad? They don't look that bad on Read More

Nice area, but too expensive - 4/17/2010
Good weather, schools and health care, but housing costs are too high for an area with an ~$50k/yr median income. It is correcting itself, but it will be several more years; think 2013. Be wise and rent until the Alt-A and Option-ARM mortgage resets have done their Read More

A great place - 3/24/2009
I have lived in San Luis Obispo for 30 years. Its about ten miles from the coast and contains Cal Ploy state university and Cuesta college. The weather here is sunny and pleasantly warm all year around. The down town is exciting with lots to do and the vibrant youthful energy that students bring to a community. Their are concerts and events on campus were a new theater was built about ten years ago that hosts world class performances. Their are good coffee shops, bars, and movie theaters at least one that plays alternative or foreign films. San Luis or SLO town as its called because of the slow mellow life that many enjoy here is relatively open minded and easy going from my experience a nice balance between the attributes of a large city and a small town. Its in close proximity to many smaller communities all within San Luis Obispo county witch all are very unique: Morro bay, Los Osos, Pismo beach and Paso Robles are just a few. For those that love the out doors you have the Read More

Reasonable weather and nice views, but missing a l - 9/29/2008
San Luis Obispo (SLO) brings me mixed feelings. I've lived here for just over two years, and found some things to be as expected, and others definitely not. The weather is usually good (except for the cold water at the beach, and cold mornings nearly year-round, and cold NW winds, especially in the spring). Outdoor activities are plentiful (great State Parks nearby, good camping opportunities, pleasant biking except for that wind, etc.). The cost of living is high, and there are very few young professionals (it's all students, retirees, or people who work at either the prison, Cal Poly, or other State/County/City work). It is VERY isolated, being nearly four hours from any real city. The culture (besides Cal Poly - spoiled and immature), tends to be narrow-minded, conservative, and anything but diverse (often makes me feel like I'm living in the 1950s) - perhaps better than North County, but that's not saying much. A few progressive policies have been put into place (smoking Read More
