Depends on your perspective. - 9/23/2019
I am a former Bay Area resident who moved to Vacaville to escape the ridiculous cost of living in the Bay. Now, if you are coming from the Bay, this place can seem more reasonably priced in comparison. But if you are comparing it to anywhere other than the Bay, it's not at all a bargain.

I went to undergrad in Davis. So I have a soft spot for this area and was vaguely familiar with Vacaville before moving here but only as a place to drive through. But I've been living here for 3 years now. And we are getting ready to move. So I thought I'd do a review.

Pluses:
1. Vacaville is growing, while we've lived here we've had new stores and business open up, and it's nice. That said, if you want decent Chinese or Japanese food you are out of luck. You'll need to go to Davis for that. You'll have to go to Winters for good steak (but it's really good!) and to the Bay or Napa or Sacramento for just about anything more upscale in terms of shopping or restaurants Read More

Boring and hot - 3/3/2019
It’s not a bad or dangerous place to live but I believe it doesn’t deserve the 5 stars most people are giving it. I have no idea where these people lived before moving here but Vacaville is boring and way too hot in the summer.
As a mother of two little kids, there is absolutely nothing you can do outside your home from about May through October because it’s either too hot or too smoky from the wildfires that inevitably occur every fall.
Except for 2 indoor bouce-house play centers (at about $12 per hour) where the kids will catch all the viruses going around, you’re confined to your beautiful home (which you can afford by not living in the Bay Area city where you work).
I’ve lived in a bunch of other cities around the world, and unless you can live in a culturally-rich European city, I’d recommend Sacramento over Vacaville. When I lived in Sac, there was always something to do (train museum, zoo, etc) which of course I can still visit after a 45 minute drive, but Read More

It's not a cultural or intellectual hub - 5/16/2010
If you enjoy a sophisticated urban environment, if you're single, if you're highly educated and appreciate access to continuing higher education at the post-graduate level, be prepared to drive at least 50 miles to meet your needs. Vacaville is a middle-of-the-road kind of place that's great for low- to middle-wage-earners with kids who enjoy watching network television, listening to top-40 radio, and eating at chains and fast-food restaurants. I've lived here for 20 years for work reasons and will probably leave when I retire. It's not horrible, it's just not very interesting. Think tract homes and chain shopping/dining everywhere. The countryside's pretty in the spring when the hills turn emerald green.

It feels safe, most people are pretty friendly, and it's right on I-80 so you can hit the freeway to get to cultural events (decent museums, opera, symphony, movies with subtitles/experimental films, and ballet in places like Berkeley and San Francisco) and continuing Read More

Hot in the valley..... - 9/24/2009
For anyone wondering about the climate here, Vacaville gets hot in the summer! It is usually hotter here than in Sacramento. The city of Fairfield is right next to us and it is anywhere from about 5 to 10 degrees cooler there, we do not get any of the cooler weather because of the hills that separate Vacaville from Fairfield. The winters here are usually very short, not very wet; definitely cold. When it does rain, it usually pours all at once! Spring is really nice here, perfect Read More

Vacaville's Vibrant Faith Community - 4/5/2009
Vacaville, CA has a vibrant faith community. From various protestant churches (The Father's House, The Mission, Valley Church, First Baptist, SonRise) to Catholic, Vacaville's churches support a strong community of faith that isn't shy to hold events open to the public...comedians, kid's activities in Andrews Park, etc. They are active in civic affairs...cleaning up after Merriment on Main and after the Friday night concerts in the park during the summer, feeding the homeless, and sponsoring the Vacaville storehouse where food and clothing are provided to those in need. National and international speakers and musicians often speak and perform in Vacaville's churches, often as part of their regularly and frequently scheduled conferences and Read More

Vacaville is a decent place to live. - 10/31/2008
Vacaville is a decent place to live. Traffic is not bad, shopping is excellent, the downtown has made major improvements in ambience. It is reasonable close to some wonderful places to spend time: San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and the Sierras, and the Calif. coast. Sacramento has lots to offer culturally and is only 45 minutes away. Housing values are depressingly low right now. There is a lack of interesting mom and pop ethnic restaurants, but every chain eatery known to man has a branch Read More

Best of both worlds, to the east we have the mountains. To the west we have the beaches. And in between there are miles of bike trails. Traffic is pretty good, road rage doesn't seem to be as much of a problem here as seen in some of the other cities in CA. Read More
