Overall a fantastic place to live! - 10/19/2008
Great place to live. Housing is pricey, but I wouldn't trade it for Aspen, which is only 17 miles away (and of course much more pricey). Most people in Basalt are full time residents who are working and have families and more "normal" circumstances than Aspen. Most do commute to Aspen every day. Basalt is between Aspen and Carbondale, which is also a great town and being close to both are perfect. This is the great restaurant center of the whole valley. Tons of great golf courses, especially in Carbondale and further down valley. Downtown Basalt is very quaint with great shops, restaurants and bars. The hiking, biking and of course skiing are just second to none. With Basalt being where the two rivers, Frying Pan and Roaring Fork meet, it also has some of the best fly-fishing in the world. Just up the road behind Basalt about 20 miles (of spectacular scenery following along the river) is the Reudi Resevoir - spectacular lake with all sorts of boating.
