Outdoor Paradise Breweries, Cheap Homes, and Fiber - 4/17/2021
A digital nomad / nature lover's sunny, perfect weather paradise, at half the cost of touristy Durango. Cortez is Colorado's under-the-radar town that's mostly only known to cross country road trippers and adventure lovers. 45 to 90 minutes in any direction gets you Sedona like deserts, 14k foot snow in Telluride, rafting/climbing in Moab or nightlife in Durango. The town has plenty of local high quality restaurants, good coffee, a few breweries, $59 connections to Denver, and awesome local radio. Unlike Durango you are not in a canyon and the hill top city has 360 views of 14k peaks, mesas, sunset and distant desert. I moved out to Cortez, Colorado after a 30 day trip around the US. Of all the places I visited, this was the place I deemed best to move for a multitude of reasons. It hasn't disappointed at all as since I've moved from Pennsylvania, I've never been happier or healthier.
Cortez is a small, western town but is an outdoor recreational dream. The county has over 60,000 archeological sites, a National Park, a National Forest, and two National Monuments. The close, day trip driving options also provide endless adventures in all 4 states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah respectively without the extreme high cost of living found typically elsewhere.
Cortez also provides many wonderful local parks and an amazing Recreation Center (where I got into the best shape of my life thanks to the 6,200 feet in elevation) with a 2 story indoor swimming facility. Cortez is a horrible dirty boring town. - 12/2/2020
I've live on this area and cannot recommend it to anyone. Cortez and Montezuma county are horrible. School are bad. After meeting several local teachers I am surprised they have a college degree. Surprisingly poor grammar and dress like homeless people. There is no entertainment. People here thing entertainment means going to a bar and getting drunk. The restaurants are horrible. Bad good and really bad services. Very few are even clean. The local government is corrupt and the police dept is incompetent and bullies. The local sheet of dept is worse. The population is low class and very undereducated. Don't even attempt to have an intelligent conversation. Conversation is about the local car races and the bars. Medical services are very poor. Doctors ate in poor health, over weight and just lazy. The hospital is dirty understaffrd and poorly run. Shopping is limited to ask mart and 2 grocery stores. Just a sad, poor, dirty town with nothing going on. I am moving as soon as possible.

Not great place for kids - 10/7/2019
I've lived here for about 6 years now. Cortez is a very small town with no really good paying jobs. So it might be best to have money already to live off of or a your own business.
95% of the people here are friendly and truly great people. They are what has caused me to still be living here.
That being said though, the Cortez city government is very corrupt on the management level and the worst I've ever seen.
The public school system has some great teachers overall but the system as a whole is awful. If you want your kids to be sexually active, do drugs and not be able to even spell when their adults, it would be exactly what you want. However if you want them to get a great education you will have to choose a private school. There are a few to choose from that are awesome. Not very expensive at all, small classes with more 1 on 1 and without all the awful stuff.

Cortez is a beautiful area and if you live out in the country its nice not having a neighbor right out your kitchen window. However, my experience with the neighbors in the country have not been well received. They have no respect for your animals or your life. They love to shoot their guns everywhere including on your property whether you are standing there or not. Enjoy those wild animals, coyotes or foxes well not for long they love to kill them too. If you are looking for a guardian state for animals, this is NOT the place.
As for the town there is barley enough to keep one entertained. The only activities are the outdoor ones. So you got to love snow and water, all the time. I think if you move here you need to have a large amount of money. There are no jobs and if you do get one it doesn’t pay well.

I guest what makes Cortez so great is the tourist we get nearly every summer. I'm not sure about the education though. I also like the quietness rather than hearing helicopters, cop car chases, and everyday mishaps. I'd like to start my own garden to supply myself and also be resourceful. The animals too are wonderful ecspecially the horses. Finally I'm somewhere I won't disturb anyone from a Native American gathering going on all night. We sing, pray and we're loud after getting out of our teepee in the morning to meet'n'greet our relatives, and new family
