It has a population of around 20,000 people and is known for its stunning natural surroundings and outdoor recreational opportunities. Many people are drawn to Montrose for its affordable cost of living and strong sense of community. However, others have mixed opinions about living in this particular place.

Montrose seems to be a popular choice for people looking to escape the hustle and bustle of bigger cities. One user, Sarah Smith, praises the city's quiet and laid-back atmosphere, stating "I love the slower pace of life here in Montrose. It's a great place to raise a family and feel connected to your neighbors." Unless you're in the healthcare or oil industry, there's not much for employment options." While Montrose may not be for everyone, it seems to have a strong sense of community that resonates with many residents. Tom Thompson praises the tight-knit community, stating "I've lived in Montrose all my life and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. People here genuinely care about each other and it's a great feeling to be a part of that." Regardless of the mixed opinions, it's clear that Montrose has a unique charm that draws people in and fosters a strong sense of belonging for many residents.

Montrose--It's a great place to live! Part II - 11/20/2006
(My first entry seemed to have been cut short. Here is the rest.)
And have I mentioned the view?! To the south are the fantastic San Juan mountains; to the east, smaller, closer mountains; to the northeast are the hills lining Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park; to the north is Grand Mesa (the world's largest mesa); and running down the west side is the Uncompahgre Plateau. This all adds up to not just a lovely view, but many opportunities for outdoor activities, from camping and hiking, to hunting and fishing, to skiing and snowmobiling.

The weather in Montrose is quite pleasant. There are 4 definite, but temperate seasons. It occasionally gets above 100 and below 0, but not often. There are long, lovely springs and falls. Summer evenings are always delightfully cool. The average yearly precipitation is only about 9", meaning few rainy days and little snow. Sunshine is the rule. Irrigation is plentiful in the area, so green lawns are the Read More

Montrose--It's a great place to live! - 11/20/2006
Our experience living in Montrose has been completely positive. We moved here from Lincoln, NE, 27 years ago. But before making the move, we waited for a good job to come along, rather than moving first and then "taking pot luck." It's true that in most households both spouses must work, but most do anyway wherever you live. There are plenty of jobs available in Montrose, but most are not high-paying. Many are service industry positions. But if you look and are patient, higher paying jobs are here. Presently there is a need for experienced, skilled industrial workers.

We bought our present home 16 years ago and its value has more than tripled since then. This is good news for us, but not so good for those wishing to find a low priced home. I can't quote the current average home price, but for $250,000 (in 2006), you can get a decent 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1500 square foot new or newer home in a nice neighborhood. The home appreciation rate on this website is Read More

Great Place to visit but no place to live - 11/14/2006
My wife and I moved from the Washington, DC area to Western Colorado. The San Juans mountains hypnotized us. They are stunningly beautiful! We wanted to move to Montrose but wound up buying a home in Delta which is about 30 minutes north(less expensive area). However we both got jobs in Montrose. After 15 months though, we left. Here are some interesting things we learned about the region (Delta down to Ouray):

1 It's a tough place to make a living. Many (yes, many) people work two or more jobs and pay is terrible. Jobs are hard to find. Gasoline is expensive. Alot of people feel trapped because they can't afford to leave.

2 We found out that for every two that arrive one leaves. Real Estate Agents know this and are aware they could pick the listing back up in a few months.

3. They don't like newcomers, especially Californians and to a lesser degree Texans (the place is loaded with Texans). For the newcomer to make friends with a native... Read More
