What BestPlaces Users Say about Washington

Washington, D.C. is the capital city of the United States, known for its iconic landmarks such as the White House and the National Mall. With a population of over 700,000 people, it is a bustling city filled with history, culture, and diversity. Many people choose to live in Washington, D.C. for various reasons, but what do actual residents have to say about their experience living there?

According to many user reviews on BestPlaces.net, Washington, D.C. seems to be a popular place to live, with a majority of reviewers giving it five stars. One user, Michael, says, "Living in Washington, D.C. has been an unforgettable experience. The city is filled with opportunities, from job prospects to cultural events, and it has a great public transportation system." Another reviewer, Emily, shares, "I have lived in D.C. all my life and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. The diversity, history, and energy of the city make it a unique and vibrant place to call home." Both Michael and Emily highlight the city's diverse offerings and sense of energy as major draws for living in Washington, D.C.

However, not all reviewers have positive things to say about living in the city. John shares, "The cost of living in D.C. is outrageous. Housing prices and rent continue to rise, making it difficult for middle-income individuals and families to afford a decent place to live." This sentiment is echoed by another reviewer, Maria, who adds, "The traffic in D.C. is a nightmare. Commuting to work can take hours, and the public transportation system can be unreliable at times." Despite these drawbacks, both John and Maria still appreciate the city's cultural and historical significance.

In conclusion, based on various user reviews, it seems that living in Washington, D.C. has its pros and cons. The city offers a vibrant and diverse atmosphere, along with many opportunities, but it also comes with a high cost of living and challenging traffic. Ultimately, the decision to live in Washington, D.C. may depend on an individual's priorities and preferences.

DC Life not good - 3/8/2007
I lived in the DC area for 5 years. Here are my experiences.

Pros:
1) Great restaurants
2) Smithsonian
3) National monuments
4) Georgetown nightlife
5) Bike trails

Cons:
1) Transient city, everyone is from somewhere else
2) Very hard to make friends, most people have bad personalities
3) Housing costs are very high
4) Lacks a hometown culture, what is unique about DC? After 5 years I could not tell

Great place to live...if you can afford it. - 12/27/2006
I have lived in Southern Cal for many years. I moved to the DC area in 1988 for the season changes. The DC area is full of fun things to do for the whole family. DC also has one of the best train and bus systems in the USA.

The two biggest stresses for me to live here in Northern Virginia is the astronomical housing prices and the traffic is getting worse every year. Many people commute all the way from West VA and PA!!

I recommend living outside the Capitol Beltway if you want to buy a house under $1 Million.

This is the city in where you want to come if you want to loose your family and work 60 hours a week, just to stay on top of all the other wanna make a good impression just graduated college co-workers. It seems that traffice is another sore spot here, as commuting anywhere will not only challenge your concentration and patience, but also your ability to find parking without getting fined or possibly worse, towed. Besides the larges STD community in the country this area does have a lot to offer for the people that love to mingle, showboat, brag or just be stuck up like the rest of the Washintonians. But the lots of museums, culturally speaking this place is a Mecca. You will find a lot of different things to do and visit around the area. However, again, if you want to keep your sanity and your family, this might be the worst spot right behind NY. Unless of course you are wanting to pay a cool half a million for a house in the suburb (you will need about that for a Townhouse...at a Read More

Give me a break on the crime postings - 11/16/2006
I have lived in DC (actually in the city) for over 3 years and have never experienced, nor known anyone who has experienced any kind of violent crime. Do I live in one of the nicer areas of DC (upper Northwest near Chevy Chase, MD)...you bet! Guess what, it is a big, US city like any other (I have lived in Philadelphia, NYC and LA), and you find a neighborhood that is safe. If you live in the trendier/gentrifying neighborhoods like Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Capitol Hill (not main part, but the outlying cheaper parts), then you just have to know that there is crime and be smart.

DC does have expensive housing and the taxes are high, but all the museums, zoo, etc. are free which can add up to very big savings if that is your thing. Restaurants are great and many young families are moving to the inner suburbs and back into the city because commutes from the suburbs can be Read More

Great fun, as long as you avoid being out at night - 11/8/2006
DC/MD/VA was a tough place to live, especially for a single white female. It's a decent place during the day, but I wouldn't reccomend going anywhere at night unless you're with a large group. In the first two weeks of living in DC, I was mugged 3 times, threatened by hoodlums, and witnessed 2 holdups at the same convenience store.
Advice? Visit DC during the day, get out before nightfall, and make your life in Virginia or North Carolina. Much Read More

I want OUT! - 9/27/2006
I have lived in the DC area for 5 years now. I want out. It's hectic, people don't care, people are transparent and it's a transient town. Nobody puts roots down here. Weather sucks, traffic sucks, this place blows. Don't do it - unless you're the Read More
