Cliquey - 2/15/2016
I grew up in this small town, and I got out as quickly as possible. It is extremely cliquey, and people are rude. If you're from the "right" family, you'll be fine, but if you aren't then you are treated like a second class citizen. Education is not valued here at all, and women aren't regarded as being able to hold higher positions (unless you're a realtor). There are few jobs outside of the Sugar Mill or Walmart, so anyone with talent generally leaves the area upon graduating from high school, so there is a definite problem with stagnation.
Racism runs rampant, and co-mingling of different races is rare and looked upon as strange by locals.
Unless you love freshwater fishing, there isn't much to do in this town. Restaurants come and go within weeks or months, and the movie theater is closed more often than it is open. There are few shopping opportunities, and only a few bars. The town is only an hour away from either West Palm Beach or Fort Myers, and most locals Read More

Speed Traps - 2/8/2014
I will never decide to take the scenic route again to Miami by going through this place. I guess because I was on my way to Miami to represent a client for court the next morning, and I presume because I had New York tags (and presumably going a couple miles over the limit-although there was no traffic in sight) some officer sitting in a speed trap (which I am sure is the only thing they have to do there) tried to turn it into a swat team (with about five cars as backup) over a routine ticket. Avoid this town! Take SR 60 to the turnpike and avoid the hassle. Bob Read More

Crime! - 8/11/2012
If something is not done with offenders in Hendry County we will be higher in crime. Offenders need to be punished harshly. We are experiencing a higher population of criminals coming out of Miami than ever before, it is time to start kicking ass and stopping this pampering with criminals. Give law enforcement more authority and stop bashing them when one of these criminals gets hurt while committing a crime. If we want to take back our communities we need to eradicate not rehabilitate. I worked in a private prison for many years and could assure you that the pampering of criminals that goes on is one of the reasons for repeat offenders. Judges need to hand out the highest punishment allowed by law and monitor their activities more often. Just my Read More

Stay away - 5/15/2008
We moved to Clewiston in Oct. 07 and I can't wait to get out of here. The smell is horrible and the only job that one can find is at US Sugar or Walmart. Housing here is incredibly high. You can find a better, bigger place in West Palm Beach with a swimming pool, jacuzzi, lighted tennis courts, oh, and the beach, cheaper than in Clewiston. Expect to pay 1300 a month for a townhouse that is 3bd, 1 bath with nothing else. The place is unappealing and the people here or the majority, are rude and speak very little English. If you want a job be prepared to drive to the Palm Beaches or to Fort Myers. The humidity is horrid mixed with the sweet smell of the sugar plant, Ewww.
I have seen 2 different families in the 2 months month move out next door that worked at US Sugar because it is dangerous there and with everything else, they couldnt stand it. Read More

Not worth the price for this town. - 3/2/2008
Sellers must think that they have waterfront property because the housing cost are through the roof. You can not find a decent non-fixer-uper for less than 250,000. Unreal!
Another downside is the smell from the sugar plant. No matter where you live in Clewiston, the smell overpowers Read More

When it is sugar season, plug your nose - 3/2/2008
Walking out of my house in the morning makes me want to puke from the horrible sugar plant. The smell is enough to make me move far Read More
