I hate this place! - 12/18/2005
If you are not a student this is not the place to raise a family. I have a decent paying job but there is no way I can afford to buy a home. The are old wooden shacks that sell for $150,000 here. The UF students might like Gainesville, but it is overcrowded, traffic is horrible, and everything is overpriced. I will definitely be moving up north next

Gainesville is a cool place to live....The University of Florida brings a lot of culture to town. There are students from all over the country, and lots of clubs and bars for them to go to. The best thing, I think, is the little restaurants that are all over the place. Gainesville is a largely liberal town and there are lots of "alternative" people walking around downtown. The only thing that isn't so hot is the traffic. Rushhour on one of few of the major road isn't just a 5 o'clock traffic jam, it lasts for hours when the hospitals change shifts. I grew up here and work as a delivery driver, so I know all the shortcuts. The schools are good, and there are a community college and a university in addition for post-high school education. Jobs are plentiful, but can be hard to find because of the college kids. The city is somewhat spread out, but there is definitely more urban areas with lots of old homes for rent and apartments. Gainesville is a traditional, old southern town that has grown and changed along with the university (49,000 students). If you drive 15 minutes away from town, you will find yourself driving back in time through old towns and old farmlands. Jobs are not plentiful and the pay scale is on the lower end. But, life is pleasant. It is very hot and humid in the summer while the winters are cool. The community tends towards progressive and envioromentally concerned.
