Can't Afford to Live Here in Retirement! - 6/8/2015
We have owned a small half duplex in the City of KCB for the past 11 years. Now that I am retired and my husband will be retiring in a few years, we need a larger place to live as our sole residence. Per the Sperling reports the overall cost of living in KCB is 165% of the national average and housing cost is much worse at 302%. Even though we own a townhouse in Virginia outside Washington, DC, where housing cost is 193% of the national average, we do not think selling both will allow us to comfortably buy something larger in KCB. If you love the island lifestyle and easy access to a wide range of fishing opportunities, the alternative is to move into the adjacent City of Marathon, where there is a somewhat higher crime rate and less zoning and fiscal control (water treatment, building control, etc.). The public beaches in Marathon are sometimes closed due to water quality issues. Nonetheless this is probably the trade off we will make in the next one to two years.
