Prices of goods - 11/25/2007
Though the cost of living in Tallahassee, FL is generally lower than many large cities, we pay through the nose for certain items. One month ago milk at WALMART, (the cheapest place in town), was $5.50 a gallon. Currently it is just over $4.00.
In addition produce is more costly than in larger cities I have lived in, (Seattle, Phoenix, even NYC), and the quality is low. When I moved here I assumed that FL would have excellent produce but I was wrong. They must sell their good stuff to the rest of the country!!
Our utility bill is roughly the same as when we lived in Phoenix, (though in Phoenix we ran the AC 24/7, thus probably making it cheaper in Phoenix than Tally).
Shopping is somewhat difficult here, especially if you like a large selection, (few stores, lots of competition for the items they sell=higher prices). When looking for specialty items like furniture or baby gear the buyer pays a higher price for poorer selection and quality.

Tallahassee's Climate - 9/22/2007
Although Tallahassee is the capitol of the sunshine state, the weather is fickle and not aways how Floridian weather is portrayed. It's hot from May until late January; warm enough for shorts, tank tops and short sleeves. However, when it gets cold, it really gets cold. Most wouldn't complain about throwing on another layer and or a puffy jacket but because of where th city is located it gets colder than other cities in the otherwise sunny

It's easy to get comfortable here - 9/19/2007
This is a college town and I too came here for college. Like most college students I researched and read about all the places I would go when I graduated to get out of Tallahassee. But when I read about the traffic problems, high crime, and high cost of living in many popular areas, I begin to realize how much I like it here. The climate is nothing to complain about. Like most places in Florida, it gets really hot for most of the year and the winter is short and uncomfortable. There are beautiful natural areas nearby. Like the others said, a majority of decent paying jobs are with the state or with the universities, but there are more businesses opening everyday. The traffic isn't too bad, even with the influx of college students every semester. I don't have kids, but the schools seem to be decent. It is the country, but it's a pleasant place to live. Entertainment is lacking, but it's getting better, and I see it as a good businesses opportunity. Overall, Tallahassee has grown on me

Tallahssee has lakes nearby and some beautiful springs and rivers. The beach is about 45 minutes away. The park system in Tallahassee was named #1 in the country recently. The universities are here (FSU and FAMU and tall Community College)so there are football weekends and cultural timgs to do as well. Our city is on its way to beeing more "Green" as

Q: What's the difference between Tallahassee and yogurt?
A: Yogurt has a live and active culture.
Seriously. It's as cultured as Jeb Bush. If you're in Tallahassee, you probably work for hte State, FSU, FAMU, or your job depends on the business from one of these. That's all there is. You should also be aware, Tallahassee isn't really Florida. It's actually South Georgia - both culturally and geographically

Tallahassee- City of Contradications - 5/14/2007
Tallahassee is a growing city with the heart of a small town. It straddles both categories and really doesn't fit either. Although it is technically a city, many amenities associated with cities (good zoos/musuems, vibrant nightlife, lots of restaurants) are generally not found in Tallahassee. However if you look, you will find some things to do. Certainly, activities involving nature are abundant and the local universities do have good events from time to time. Tallassee is certainly more diverse than most cities. The influx of students from around the globe gives Tallahassee a more cosmopolitian feel than other cities its size (although cosmopolitian isn't exactly an adjective that fits Tally). The climate is generally appealing, especially if you come from anywhere north. Summers are very hot and humid, but the rest of the year is very pleasant. I find that the climate makes Tally much more habitable than other places I've lived (up North). The job market isn't great. If you aren't

I do not recommend moving to Tallahassee unless you are a student at one of the major universities. The local community is generally poor, decent jobs are non-existent and there is little to do if you don't enjoy

Could take off - 1/2/2007
I am a native Floridian and live in central Florida right now.
With all the cookie-cutter suburban sprawl going on around the Tampa to Orlando area, plus the hurricane issues, I am beginning to re-think Tallahassee.
The image of being too conservative and being too small has made me think it was not what I wanted.
But I visited for 5 days during the holidays and was pleasantly surprised. It is very pretty up there and has several attractive neighborhoods to choose from that are not the cookie-cutter variety. What is happening elsewhere in Florida does not appeal to me...I don't want to buy a big, new stucco house on a zero lot because the insurance company won't insure an older house in an older neighborhood.
Found enough restaurants that were cutting edge, innovative, creative culinary places, so that was a big plus. Figure if they have 3-4 very good ones now, it will only get better.
I read some of the comments on
