A Great Place for Retirees - 10/23/2018
My husband and I moved here a year ago after having lived in South Florida for the better part of our lives. We are retired and love it up here. Property taxes and home insurance are very low compared to what we were paying in South Florida. We love the seasonal changes. Yes, it gets cold but not like up in the Northeast where most of my family lives. Real estate prices are excellent for resales. They are a little pricey for new construction. We upsized rather than downsized because prices were so good. People are friendly and everything we need is within 1.5 miles of our home. We are still discovering all that this city has to offer and have enjoyed farmer's markets and First Fridays. The city has many well-maintained parks, and we walk daily between two of them: Heritage and Etowah River Parks, which are both fully paved and are connected by a path going through a peaceful wooded area that leads to a pedestrian bridge over the Etowah River. We are still exploring what the Read More

I Like The Amount of Activity But Too Expensive - 8/12/2018
I lived there for almost 2 years and I loved it. Most of the places to shop for groceries and clothing are about a 10 minute walk. When I lived there the apartment I stayed in was 715 a month for a 2 bed 1 bath. Now it’s over 1000. It’s hard to live there by yourself. You have to have 2 or 3 roommates to be able to live. Hopefully one day wages will amount to the cost of living there. When living there I was working at Kmart making 7.25 and the local hospital before the new build 8.49 and still struggling. Read More

Canton Living - 12/18/2012
Cherokee County was carved out of the Cherokee Nation lands back in the early 1830's. The area was rural, with agriculture and mills being the primary business until after WWII, when the area became a lower cost of living refuge for those working in Atlanta and closer in communities. The schools suffered until recently, and now appear to be at or above the regional average. The climate is moderate, not to hot or humid in the summer and rarely seeing ice or snow in the winter. No real insect or critter problems. It is fairly Conservative, both religiously and politically. Liberal is a dirty word in Canton and surrounding Cherokee County. Most of the real Red Necks have moved further up in the hills, but you can still run across Rebel flags in a few locations. Dumb is still legal in Georgia. Having said all of that, the area has extensive outdoor recreation opportunities, lakes, trails, mountains, rivers and all of the associated fun things to do. People are friendly, as long Read More

Infrastructure not supporting growth - 4/18/2012
Canton is located north of Atlanta so location is good but one has to bear the traffic to get anywhere. I have lived in Canton for 13 years and frustrated with the traffic and the lack of infrastructure to keep up with the growth. The main highway is being re-constructed and widened and has had a large shopping area added at the interstate. A large hospital is also in the works. This is causing traffic nightmares. I have run out of patience, and blame the very poor planning. Can't see what they are working on will support it when all is said and done.

Guess I need a change because finding the ten commandments posted at the courthouse does not support the various religions here in Canton; assuming everyone is Protestant. (A clerk at a local grocery store asked me what church I go to and was shocked.)

Need more recreation and parks; and if you have any allergies such as pollen, this won't be for you, though the many trees and wildlife can be enjoyable. Read More

Too religious for me - 1/4/2010
I find the citizens here are not open minded about other religions other than Protestant/ Christianity. I also find they expect everyone to be their religion. When I first moved to this county even the grocery clerks would ask what church I go to; and the County Administration building posted the Ten Commandments in their lobby for all to see. I feel this is disrespectful to others that are not of the same belief. It is nothing for a school in this area (county next to Cherokee) to pass out the New Testament to students as they walk in the door. My religion is personal and I choose not to discuss my beliefs so Read More

Not an open minded area, nor very educated - 6/21/2009
I have lived in Canton for over 11 years and am ready to move on. I personally find the culture to be backwards, and the people --not so open minded. Religion is very important here and seems to dominate the county in education and politics. As a college professor, education is below average and I am simply amazed that many are allowed to graduate, but parents get their way first. Whine and your kid will graduate.
You will be okay if you are Baptist and devout, born and raised in the south. The county is growing rapidly but the infrastructure is not. Police have become very aggressive in the time I have been here. The county government seeks to oust illegals, almost embarrassing but at the taxpayers expense. I find racism still exists in the south. (and I am white) You can tell I have become very disillusioned with this area over time. ---but my opinion. Hot and humid Read More

Bad Area for Asthma and Allergy Sufferers - 5/8/2009
I moved to the Atlanta area in 1987 and did not have any outside allergies. In 2007, I was diagnosed with Reactive Airway Disease and have a very difficult time in the spring here.

I am considering moving, a drastic change as I have a business here, and have visited your website to see if there are any cities in the US that are less likely to make my life so Read More
