Take the Good with the Not So Good - 4/23/2023
I have lived on Kaua'i, Hawai'i for about two years now, with about 20 years of prior vacationing (up to 1 month). Living here is much different than vacationing here, as described below.

Housing: Long-term residential housing is very limited and very expensive. Animals are mostly not allowed in most rentals. Any type of ocean front or view housing is likely not going to happen here because they are all vacation rented, so you will likely be further inland. When you get into residential neighborhoods, it it tough to find anything that doesn't have other rentals either attached or in the yard (yes, these are legal, but make for crowded housing). Buying is an option of course but there is usually very limited inventory. Buying something you do not love would likely have to happen first, and then along the way you can upgrade when something else comes available.

Food: There is good food here, but much of it is either too expensive or out of a food Read More

Nice little town - 2/23/2018
My wife and I had the pleasure of visiting Kapaa in July of 2017. As tourists we found it a wonderful place. There were ample places to eat and shop for souvenirs. Nearby, Lydgate Beach is great place to take a swim. It is protected from the rough waves by a rock wall making it safe for all. Hee Fat General Store is a must visit for souvenir shopping. They have a large variety of merchandise as well as a shave ice counter inside. When we were there if you spent $100 or more you got a coupon for a free shave ice. Super #One Chinese restaurant has some of the most delicious food I've ever eaten with large portions and very reasonable prices. For a huge choice of inexpensive souvenirs there are two ABC stores in town. One is located in Coconut Grove shopping center. I would encourage everyone to park their car and walk along the downtown business district on Kuhio Highway. There are lots of cool shops to browse Read More

Why I Love Kapaa - 11/7/2017
For many, Kapaa is considered middle of the island in a way. Whether you are going North or going South, Kapaa seems to be a great midway point.

There are tons of great activities in the area: Beaches, Hiking, Restaurants, Resorts, Farmers Markets and Local Events

It's also an easy 15 or so minute drive to the airport or into Lihue for major shopping adventures to Costco, Walmart, Home Depot or the mall.

One of my personal favorite places in Kapaa (Wailua to be exact) is Lydgate State Park. Great for swimming, walking, picnic, camping, surfing and free and open to the public. Read More
