Amazing, but transient for a reason - 3/17/2019
I’ve lived in Lahaina for 11 years, and have truly enjoyed the weather, culture and natural beauty. The weather is great, though the summers are long, hot and dry. The culture is slowly eroding due to gentrification and the brain drain associated with locals moving off island for better opportunities. The natural beauty of the island is second to none... it’s constantly inspiring! It’s a great place to live for a chapter of life, but I’d say it’s challenging to stay long term. High cost of living, very high real estate costs, stunted wages with limited economy and job opportunities, questionable health care and distance from mainland are the reasons why.  Read More

Life in Lahaina/Napili - 5/9/2008
I am a relatively new arrival to the Lahaina/Westside area moving here in 2000. However, my mother was born here so my root do go deep in the Westside soil. I actually live in the northern most sector of Lahaina, in Napili. There really is quite a difference in the temperature and in a way, the life style. Napili is cooler than Lahaina with sometimes a 5 degree difference in the temperature. The cost of homes in the area have dropped slightly from the peak of 2006. However, home prices are still very high with the median price probably being around $900,000 to $1,000,000. And with those prices you don't get much of a house. Traffic out of Lahaina does get conjested from about 3:30 to 5:30. The cost of living is very high. Gasoline is $4.17 for a gallon of regular. Food is very expensive. Weather is superb. So, if you can make around $200,000 a year, living in West Maui is Read More

Paradise Found - 4/24/2008
Living in Lahaina,Maui is really a dream come true. Beautiful weather, lovely beaches and much to do. Yes, it is expensive but what special item isn't? Homes are high priced but there is never a day that you can't go to the beach (for free) and spend the day. Families celebrate birthdays, holidays and sometimes just eat dinner at the beach. The evenings are warm although it get's dark early and there are hardly any bugs! Food is expensive but native fruits are plentiful and cheap. Eat healthy and you are in the right spot.
You may feel a bit of "rock fever" now and again but you can easily fly to a neighboring island for the weekend or drive to Hana and swim in the 'seven sacred pools'. Yes, there is a big gap in the have/have not here but that is true of most places. If you love your life it will certainly love you Read More
