I lived in Challis from 1988 to 1992. At that time there was no bookstore in town. One employer, a molybdenum mine. Population consists of two groups, the mine workers who leave when the mine shuts down (which it does on a regular basis), and the very clannish local farming/ranching community.
Challis is the county seat and did not have electricity until 1971.
