Paradise, The Best Kept Secret - 1/23/2008
The Idaho panhandle is by far one of the prettiest places on earth. Filled with lush forest, abundant wildlife, world class fishing. Clean air, low crime, rich artist community, majestic views, lakes and rivers everywhere. A true sportsmans paradise with skiing at Schweitzer, boating on one of the many lakes like Lake Pend Oreille or Lake Couer d' Alene. Canoeing on Priest Lake or the Clark Fork river, hunting, fishing, and snow mobiling in the Kaniksu national forest. Or take a scenic drive on the Selkirk Loop scenic byway. Idaho is a great place to raise a family, or to live out your days on your slice of Read More

Truly a great place! - 6/23/2007
I am a little stunned to read the views from the other posters on the great and beautiful town of Sandpoint. It just goes to show how much perception changes from person to person. First let me say as a disclaimer, I am a Real Estate Agent in Sandpoint, though I am not posting this to get any leads or new clients…you can chose from any one of the over 250+ agents in our community.

Sandpoint is a great little town located on one of the largest lakes in the western U.S. It has recently experienced a housing boom, not that different from what has happened to most of the housing markets around the country over the last 3-4 years. And yes it is a great place to buy a home or just come on vacation.

What makes Sandpoint so special is its diversity, history and of course its location. Sandpoint is a kind of melting pot of cultural differences, from hippies to loggers, professionals to hermits living up in the woods, and young families to retirees, Sandpoint boast a Read More

Be prepared and do your homework first. - 1/24/2006
I'm a native of Sandpoint therefore, an endangered species. I've watched this area grow and watched the people move in and out. Erin's comments were very appropriate about living in the Sandpoint area. It's a beautiful place to live but very difficult to make a living. Most of the recent influx of residents are people that have acquired their wealth somewhere else. In short, Sandpoint is a "bedroom community" with the population exceeding the current infrastructure. Wages are low due to the state minimum wage of $5.15. Idaho has a "Right to Work" law which we refer to as the "Right to Poverty" law. Our education system is struggling to keep up and when the kids graduate, their job options are few. Our best and brightest will have to leave to secure productive employment. The two main features to the area are Lake Pend Oreille and Schweitzer Ski Resort. Both are expensive and have limited seasonal use. Don't misunderstand my comments. This is a beautiful area but it does have it's Read More

Quality of Life - 1/21/2006
The following commentary is coming from a native Californian who has lived in the likes of Santa Cruz, San Diego and Lake Tahoe -- resulting in tough reference points. Sandpoint is charming and not unlike Tahoe City maybe 30 years ago but for its climate and demographic. If you come, come with plenty of indoor hobbies, a love for and means to travel (to seek Vit. D), and a work-at-home profession.
There are many, many grey days here with only a brief summer (2 - 2.5 month) window to truly enjoy the outdoors. There is little if any economy here at present, partially due to local business tax laws coupled with the demographic. While this trend is generally improving, it will always be struggling due to extreme seasonality.
There are a few (counted on one hand) quality places to dine- namely Ivano's, Arlo's & Trinity, but absolutely nowhere to attain quality produce and fish. The nearest Trader Joe's, I'm afraid, is Seattle.
