What BestPlaces Users Say about Springfield

Springfield, Illinois is the capital city of the state and is known for its rich history, including being the home of President Abraham Lincoln. It is also a popular place to live, with a population of over 100,000 people. In order to get a better understanding of what it is like to live in this particular place, we will summarize user reviews from BestPlaces.net. These reviews touch on various aspects of living in Springfield, including the city's safety, job market, and overall quality of life.

According to user "Kimberly," who has been living in Springfield for 8 years, the city has a strong sense of community and is relatively safe. She writes, "Springfield is a great place to live. The community is tight-knit and welcoming, and I've never felt unsafe here." On the other hand, user "John" has a different perspective. He has lived in Springfield for 2 years and expresses concerns about the city's crime rate, stating, "The crime in Springfield is concerning. I've heard of several incidents in my neighborhood and it has made me question my decision to live here."

In terms of the job market, user "Samantha" shares her positive experience, having lived in Springfield for 5 years. She writes, "I have had great job opportunities in Springfield. There are many industries represented here, and I've found it easy to advance in my career." However, user "Tyler" has a different opinion. He has lived in Springfield for 10 years and mentions the lack of diversity in job options. He says, "The job market here is limited. I've struggled to find opportunities in my field and have had to commute to nearby cities for work."

In general, the overall quality of life in Springfield seems to be a mixed bag. User "Karen" has lived in the city for 20 years and speaks highly of the quality of schools and cost of living. She states, "I've raised my family here and have been very happy with the schools and affordable cost of living. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else." However, user "Mark" expresses concerns about the city's infrastructure and lack of amenities. He says, "The roads are constantly under construction and there isn't much to do here. I wish there were more entertainment options available."

In conclusion, based on these user reviews, it seems that Springfield offers a strong sense of community and decent job opportunities, but has some drawbacks such as concerns about crime and limited entertainment options. It may be a good fit for those looking for a close-knit community and affordable cost of living, but may not be the best choice for those seeking a more diverse job market or city amenities.

A horrible, crime-ridden city. - 2/9/2008
Across the state of Illinois, Springfield has a stereotype for being "peaceful and quiet" and "typically Midwestern". But having several friends that used to live in Springfield, having looked at the crime statistics to back up their statements about the city, and having visited the city several times, I can assure you that Springfield is the exact opposite of its stereotype.

Springfield has a very high crime rate that makes it impossible to live there without being in fear of becoming a victim of crime. In fact, it's probably the most dangerous mid-sized city in the state (with about 1,500 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, where 450 is the national average and a 700 is considered high). The aggravated assault rate in particular is over 4 times the national average. Gang- and drug-related violence is the norm here. In mid-sized cities like Springfield, crime can usually be avoided by not living in the bad parts of town. However, as one reviewer mentioned, the corrupt Read More

Springfield is a great place to live! - 11/18/2007
With moderate cost of living and many options for housing, Springfield is one of the best central Illinois places to live. There are many great restaurant choices especially if you look for alternatives to chain-restaurant dining. The arts scene has lots to choose from including a good local symphony, an active arts community, and regular jazz and almost every other type of live music. For the midwest, the weather can be hot and humid in the summer but the winters are fairly mild. We've lived here for 30 years and enjoy the area and the Read More

Bad place to live.... - 5/17/2007
I have lived here for 43 years. The gov. is corrupt, they don't want anything in this town but the capitol building and resulting jobs that go with it, and state agencies. They tore down the Hay Homes where all the blacks lived and built veritable mansion type multi-family dwellings which left them scattering everywhere in the city. Now instead of the crime being contained to one area, they sent it off to rent everywhere else in the city, to all neighborhoods that NEVER had problems before. That, and the welfare roles & a feeling of entitlement are very large. The schools, I promise you you don't want to send your kids to public schools here, everything you've worked to build them into will be destroyed in weeks. The saving grace is there are some good private schools. Drugs are a real problem. Miserably hot & humid, long cold sub-zero winters. Nothing to do in this town whatsoever, except go out to eat, shop, or watch a movie. Real estate to get away from the problems is getting Read More

Springfield is not a great place to live. - 6/16/2006
Springfield has bad weather- cold and long winters. Hot and very humid summers usually. It rains alot which farmers like but if you don't farm it's too much.Less than national average sunny days.Crime index is over double the national average.Lots of racial issues and problems even in the police force.Public schools are hostile and often have problems involving race.High volume of white flight so problem isn't going to get better.Utilities are higher than national average. Housing used to be somewhat cheap but not anymore. At least anywhere you would feel safe. The town and surrounding area is very ugly geographicly. It is flat with no moutains-hills-lakes-oceans or anything close to being scenically Read More

Springfield's housing is not as good as you indicate. I have looked at the surrounding area's of Austin and Springfield and Austin's housing is both cheaper and much more avalible. Springfield and surrounding area is builoding but almost all new building is very expensive and there are hundreds fewer avalible. There is almost no housing, modern housing, in the 90,000 to 140,000 price range. Read More
