Cost of Living in Saint Charles - 4/9/2010
Moving to Saint Charles from Kansas City was quite to sticker shock from a cost of living standpoint. I did do my homework and knew this would be the case, but it didn't hit me until after a few months here and we reviewed our budget. It is amazing to me that such a huge metropolis like the Chicagoland area is that there wouldn't be more efficiencies. I know being a metropolis they experience high demand on things driving the overall price for them up. However, the high tax rates on gasoline, properties, etc. is somewhat askew. The housing market bust is a good example of how this city got fat, dumb and happy off of artificially inflated pricing based on consumer demand. I would assume that the excess of taxes we have to pay in Illinois and the many villages that make up the Chicagoland area are to pay for all the litigation that continues to be perpetuated by corrupt government officials. St. Charles is a nice safe and clean community with a very lively downtown that straddles the Fox River. Downtown St. Charles has around 20 or so restraunts and pubs some with outdoor seating. There is also a historic hotel, some neat architecture, expansive parks and a great turn of the century performing arts theater.
