What BestPlaces Users Say about Wheaton

Wheaton, Illinois is a suburban city located in the western part of the state, about 25 miles from Chicago. It is known for its strong sense of community, high-performing schools, and overall family-friendly atmosphere. According to the US Census Bureau, the population of Wheaton is around 53,000 people. With its close proximity to a major city, many people choose to live in Wheaton for its small-town charm combined with easy access to urban amenities. However, as with any city, there are varying opinions on what it's truly like to live there. Below are excerpts from four different user reviews about living in Wheaton.

1) From "Samantha M." on BestPlaces.net: "I have lived in Wheaton my whole life and I absolutely love it. It has a great community feel and the schools are top-notch. There are also plenty of parks and outdoor spaces to enjoy. The only downside is the cost of living, which can be a bit high, but it's worth it for the quality of life."

2) From "John D." on BestPlaces.net: "I moved to Wheaton for work and have been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy living here. The downtown area has a great selection of restaurants and shops, and the public transportation options make it easy to get to Chicago. The only downside is the traffic during rush hour, but that's to be expected in any growing city."

3) From "Rachel S." on BestPlaces.net: "I moved to Wheaton a few years ago and have been disappointed with my experience. The cost of living is high, and there isn't much to do for young adults. Also, the winters can be brutal. I'm considering moving to a different city for a better quality of life."

4) From "Mark P." on BestPlaces.net: "I have lived in Wheaton for over 30 years and have seen it grow and change. It's a great place to raise a family, with excellent schools and a strong sense of community. There are also plenty of job opportunities in the area. The only downside is the lack of diversity, but overall, I highly recommend living in Wheaton."

Wheaton - 7/1/2006
We have resided in Wheaton since 1990. Our children went to school in the Wheaton school system from pre-kindergaten through high school. We found the schools to be excellent, in fact, part of the reason we selected Wheaton was the reputation of it's school system. Wheaton has the acclaimed Wheaton College and is close to the College of Dupage. Another reason we selected Wheaton was its excellent park system and location relative to the Prairie Path (running/walking/biking system) that is easily accessible from most parts of the city and takes you thoughout the Dupage County. Wheaton does have an abundance of Churches, but we never felt pressured to participate if we did not want to do so. There are little if any industrial properties, has just enough commercial retail, is close enough to shopping centers in nearby communities, has a downtown that is undergrowing revitalization and is an easy communte to Chicago or other suburbs. The tollway system is close by and the Metra train Read More

Conservative Sheltered Suburbia - 4/13/2006
This is the epitomy of "suburbia", except everyone loves to drive gas guzzling SUVs. Everyone here loves to "support the troops", but they wont do anything beyond buying a 2 dollar magnet for their arab oil guzzling SUV. The schools are good, I will give this place that, but there isn't anything to do.

Churches are literally everywhere. I can't drive to school without seeing 5 different churchs, most of which are regressive and conservative. This is probably because Wheaton College is located here, the Harvard for Christians. Everyone is very conservative and very wierd. It's not unusual to see people walking in downtown wheaton with a backpack on the wrong way. Its a very wierd town.

If you happen to be very church going and conservative, you will probably fit right in. Us Wheatonites have what we call the "Wheaton Bubble", because wheaton is its own bizzare sheltered town. Saying something like "God doesn't exist" or even questioning the bible Read More
