RUST BELT OASIS - 3/2/2020
I’ve lived in Michigan City for over 10 years now(March 2020) and am a native of Northwest Indiana (40 years.)
Michigan City is an older town, on Lake Michigan ESE of Chicago on the Michigan State Line while still being in Indiana. We’re dual located in the region known as Michiana, and on the Eastern edge of the Chicago Metro, and known to the locals, as The Region(NW Indiana.) It is approximately 50 miles (80 km) ESE of Chicago and 40 miles (64 km) west of South Bend. The city had a population of 31,479 at the 2010 census. Michigan City is noted for both its proximity to Indiana Dunes National Park and for bordering Lake Michigan. Due to this, Michigan City receives a fair amount of tourism during the summer months, especially by residents of Chicago and of nearby cities in Northern Indiana.
Ok, so the weather is not as bad as everyone seems to think it is, especially if you’re not from the Midwest. It can get brutal in the Winter with wind chills to -20 to -30F but Read More

A nice place to visit. - 2/15/2017
My in-laws live there.
I love to visit the place.
Nice people. The city has everything, malls, restaurants, cafes. It's very close to the nature.
It's cold in the winter and it snows a lot.

But I wouldn't want to live there.

First, It's really hard to find a professional job in the city. Many people have to commute to Chicago and Michigan for work (Chicago is just about an hour away).

And Indiana is a very much republican state so if you're more liberal it's not quite place for you.

And it's cold in the winter. Read More

Overall, not good. - 1/25/2010

HUMID and HOT in the June,July, August and bone chilling cold in Dec and Jan.
Snow is just crazy...the lake effect snow machine comes right down off lake michigan and pounds us on a yearly basis

The only thing good about this area is the tree colors in the fall, and the 4 weeks of spring weather we get in late april to the end of may

Great summer beach town - 2/14/2008
We have a great city right on the south shore of Lake Michigan. Shopping, boating, restaurants, golf...everything is no more than 15 minutes away. No rush hour traffic like Chicago or those big cities and suburbs. Inexpensive housing and taxes. Play golf during the week on uncrowded courses for $25.00 or less with a cart! No crowds. Thats what is nice if you want to get away from the big Read More
