What BestPlaces Users Say about Gardner

Gardner, Massachusetts is a small city located in Worcester County. It has a population of approximately 20,000 and is known for its historic downtown area and annual Chair City Arts & Music Festival. However, living in this particular place may have its own pros and cons, as seen in the various user reviews on BestPlaces.net.

According to "Tom" who has lived in Gardner for over 20 years, the city has a "great small-town feel" and is "close to bigger cities for shopping and entertainment." However, he also mentions that the job market is limited and the cost of living is high. "Lisa" echoes this sentiment, stating that while the community is welcoming and the school system is good, the "cost of living can be tough" on families. On the other hand, "John" praises Gardner for its "low crime rates" and "beautiful parks," but he does mention that "the winters can be harsh" and "there's not much to do for young adults." Finally, "Mary" shares that she has lived in numerous cities and Gardner is by far the "friendliest and safest" place she has lived in. She also notes the affordable housing and the "quaint downtown area." However, she does point out that "the lack of diversity can be a downside for some." Overall, the user reviews for living in Gardner, Massachusetts are mixed, but many appreciate the small-town atmosphere and community feel while acknowledging the challenges of high cost of living and limited job opportunities.

Great city up and coming - 3/23/2018
I’ve lived here since 2014 my house is up 58%, the city is improving constantly. We have a very efficient city hall, the people are helpful. Our elected officials care and it shows. The police are visible and respond quickly. Definitely a working class environment, some neighborhoods are better than others but everyone is approachable. Hopefully the affordability will not cause gentrification of our more affordable housing. We have great waste and recycling disposal. The city has two entrances to route 2 very convenient. Many grocery stores, I was very impressed with price choppers higher end options as well as Hannaford convenient location. It’s nice to live in a small American city Read More

Mixed Bag. - 7/20/2008
A city at odds with itself. Beautiful rustic spots mixed with urban blight. You want this city to succeed because of it's proud, hard working citizens. However, the city has an insular nature that may be contributing to it's shortcomings. Poor urban planning and graft have marred some previously bucolic areas such as the once majestic high school. It is a mixed bag: no industry, swampy housing developments, abandoned railroads, limited retail and an ill advised prison contrast a lovely city college, a thriving hospital, an active airport and a local golf Read More
