Alpena, MI is a small city located on the northeastern side of the state. One of the best kept secrets in Michigan - 10/22/2019
One of the ten best places to visit in Michigan.
I was born and raised in Michigan but now live in Seattle. I get back to Michigan frequently because my brother lives in Grand Rapids. I love visiting the Alpena area for all of its natural beauty and some of the best fishing on Thunder Bay, Long Lake and the Thunder River. The town is quaint, clean and there seems to be pride in the community. Some good local cafes, friendly people, a bit too conservative for my taste but nice nevertheless. Costs are certainly much more reasonable than Seattle and I could see myself retiring

An Active and Engaging Community - 2/23/2011
Alpena is a town for all ages, with plenty to do, more than one person could attend. I think the events are varied and offer something for everyone. The town is lovely, the lake is beautiful, the people are friendly, and for its size, I can't imagine more culture being offered. This town has two theaters where I've seen some great acting in numerous plays. The college is outstanding, a regional highlight; the hospital (ARMC) offers quality care; the library has many high quality events, outdoor winter (and summer)sports can't be better, it has a quality museum....
