Detroit - 7/30/2007
Detroit is a great city with a lot of great History and Pride!! From the auto capital of the world to Music we have much to be proud of! For those who have never been here yes we have had our share of hardships! That being said, much of the blanket of despair is in the past!! Downtown has had a great rebirth! From great new restaurants to the incredible Comerica park and Ford field! The nightlife also heats up with some pretty impressive Casino's including Greektown, Motor City, and MGM Grand!!! New river walk and development show no signs of slowing down!! Yes Detroit's neighborhoods need some work. Crime is still high in some areas, but overall it is a place to be!! You have to come see for

What's with all the bigotry? - 6/18/2007
I'm no bleeding heart liberal. Trust me. My views are quite conservative (some who know me would probably say arch conservative), but all these posts about how Detroit has gone downhill because "the negros [sic] moved in," etc. are really kind of sickening. Having the views that I do, I can get impatient with black people who see white people as categorically racist, and blame all of their difficulties in life on racism, but let's face reality: Black people have had a lot stacked against them for a long time. Instead of portraying black people as the cause of inner-city decline, why not try the novel idea that maybe blacks are the people left in neighborhoods that have gone downhill because, unlike many white people, they cannot afford to move out to the 'burbs. Rather than seeing the return of whites to central cities as the cause of "gentrification" and revival, try the idea that white people with bucks move into these areas AFTER the improvement gets underway, at which

Detroit-Better Late Than Never - 5/24/2007
I haven't been to many places in this country. Basically, a mid-westerner at heart and will probably live and die the rest of my life here in the Detroit area. This is not a complaint! I know there are better places than here, but I enjoy watching this city transform. Sure it's slow and a long time coming, but I honestly have to say that this town will be a major player again any many ways from jobs to entertainment to technology. I have seen and read many things going on or planned for this town and by 2015-2020 many of the concerns about downtown will be a thing of the past. The biggest problem (outside of schools) are the neighborhoods. At one time, Detroit had the best areas to live in the country and many of these places STILL EXIST. Recently, the mayor identified areas in the city to concentrate on redeveloping. What else can we ask for? All many of us metro Detroiters want is a nice city to work and play and maybe even live. So far, I work and play here perhaps in the future

The crime statistics are bad for Detroit, and... - 5/12/2007
Most of the crimes that occur in Detroit go unreported. Most citizens have little faith in the Detroit Police. There is no reason to report most crimes, becuase they will go unsolved anyways. Detroit is reported as #1 most dangerous city. Imagine if all crimes that were committed were reported...
My house was broke into about 2 years ago. I called 911. They said they would send a unit over. I stayed up all night waiting. The next morning I called, and they said they never recieved the call. Still, to this day the crime went unreported. Most people would think I should have went down to the police station to report it so I can make my insurance claim, but wait! The insurance rates are so high here because of the high crime, in addition to the false claims people make to rip off the insurance companies that no decent working individual can afford it. I had about $4,000 of belongings stolen, and I could get robbed every 2 years and still be in a better financial

Detroit, A great place for young urbanites. - 4/3/2007
Metro Detroit is defiantly somewhere to consider if you’re attracted to cities like Chicago or Toronto, but don’t have the income to afford reasonable housing in those markets. The city of Detroit probably isn’t the best place to move for newcomers. I would recommend Detroit inner ring suburbs such as Ferndale, Dearborn, Royal Oak, or Southfield. These suburbs are fairly stable markets with many big city amenities and a very urban atmosphere. Detroit is currently working on a light rail system that will connect Detroit to many of its suburbs, Similar to Chicago.
When many people think of Detroit they envision urban blight and decay. This is true to some extent; however the landscape of Detroit is quickly starting to change. For the first time in over 60 years the city of Detroit is experiencing a higher percentage of new development then the surrounding suburbs. Downtown Detroit is also becoming a very viable area of the city to live, along with other intercity

about Detroit - 3/31/2007
This is for the guy who said every city has bad area's. You're right every big city does. However, it's just that Detroit has more bad area's. I've lived in and near Detroit, and there are parts of Detroit that look like a war zone. As it stands, I now live in Chicago, and there are more good area's of Chicago than there are bad, unlike Detroit. Detroit has held the title for many years as the murder capital of the country, and there is a reason for that! Detroit, just like Flint, is the dirt under Michigan's finger

Some good some bad - 3/29/2007
Detroit has some nice places don't get me wrong. Downtown Detroit by the Comerica Park is nice and it's surrounds. But when you get to 7 mile or 6 mile and van Dyke or Gratiot - lookout. It is getting really bad around there. I woudnt even suggest living in Detroit unless you have metal bars on your

I love Detroit - 3/28/2007
Okay, so I read some of the bad comments about Detroit and I must agree with the woman who wrote that she is raising her family in the city and that all black people are not poor, crackheads, uneducated...etc. I was born and raised in Detroit and have lived in several neighborhoods, some considered good, some considered bad. In all of them I can remember being able to go to my neighbors house without any hesitation for anything, because we all felt like family. Who wants to live where you never speak to your neighbors or you only see them once a year because they go in and out the house from their garages. Where's the soul and spirit of the neighborhood? Overall, Detroit has a good vibe and sense of unity. We are a soulful city that loves good music, good food, and good people. And not too mention we thrive on driving good cars, we are Motown and the Motor City. How many cities can boast that! Sure there are some bad apples, there are some terrible crimes that takes place but

Ridiculous City - 3/20/2007
Whoever wrote the comment entitled "Detroit Is a Beautiful City" is either a liar or a comedian. That may have been the most far reaching crock of BS I have heard in a while. Truth is Detroit tries to use the "Downtown clean up" as a veneer, meanwhile those that live/work there know it is a cesspool. A large amount of its citizens are nothing more than a drain to the state's resources and the city is a giant leech sucking the surrounding communities dry. I have seen 3rd world neighborhoods that are nicer than some in Detroit. The economy is terrible, the crime is unimaginable, and I wouldn't send my dog to the schools. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to live in Detroit for any other reason than perhaps family; and if it's family and you love 'em, get them out too! No other reason.

Detroit covers many areas - not just the city prop - 3/5/2007
Many of the posts here are quite negative about Detroit, and while I agree with the fact that parts of Detroit can look "blighted" I'm not sure any big city dosen't have it's "blighted" areas also. I have lived in the "SUBURBS" of Detroit my entire life, worked in the city of Detroit on and aff for over 20 years. Most (if not all) of my family and extended family have lived here for generations and choose to stay in Michigan (Southeast Michigan, suburbs of Detroit, within 30 minutes drive of Downtown DTroit) and many have moved back after living in places like Seattle, Chicago, etc.
I would classify our social status of upper middle to upper class white, advanced education, etc.
While many of the cities I have visited seem better than Detroit, it seems hard to compare. If you look at appearances, yes, many cities look better. When it comes to crime, many cities "feel" safer, but I think that is mostly an illusion. Living, working, and playing in and around Metro Detroit
