Rome wasn't built in a day - 10/9/2006
First of all, the site asks people to leave comments about the place where they live, not places that they,ve heard about, visited, or moved away from many years ago. If you have only visited the city or if you've moved than you can not give a more accurate account of the city that someone who lives here right now at the moment. Of course the city is having economic problems, but what city is not. We're in the midst of a war that is a major setback to the economy of our entire country. The government and some dedicated people from the city are trying their best to restore the city to the great city that it once was. Yet they are criticized because they can not do it all in one week or even a year. On top of that they get no help from the citizens who complain so much. "Rome wasn't built in a day". And as far as crime goes--Please! it is a city of over 860,000 people. Before you take into account crime statistics I recomnend that you take a look at the actual numbers. They give

Not sure what Detroit he is talking about - can't - 10/1/2006
This guy must be living in a dreamworld. Detroit is BY FAR the worst city I have ever lived in or around. Unsafe, dirty, burned out, abandoned buildings, drugs and crime everywhere. Negative population growth - why? Because everyone wants OUT! Stop the silly propoganda and let's get real about this city's problems. It will take positive, yet REALISTIC attitudes to turn this around. Not some la-la land mentality. And for God's sake, don't leave your car doors unlocked, let alone your house

DETROIT IS A BEAUTIFUL CITY! - 9/4/2006
I have lived in San Francisco, Seattle, and Paris, but Detroit far surpasses them all in every way.
For starters, Detroit is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. Wonderful, safe, tree-lined streets dominate the landscape. Crime is virtually non-existent in the inner city core. We have even gone overseas for a vacation....only to realize on the plane that we had left our home unlocked...but we were not even concerned. When we returned, everything was just as we left it. It is such a blessing to live in a place that offers such security!
Also, Belle Isle is an urban oasis, a tremendous place for a summer picnic or family reunion. It is meticulously maintained by the city. It is almost as if the second a piece of trash hits the ground, there are park workers there to pick it up and dispose of it

Moved here last year for (suprise) a job. - 8/29/2006
I have lived in numerous cities. I grew up in Pittsburgh and lived in Atlanta, Cleveland, Florida, and a small town in central PA. I have been to most major cities in the US. When I met my future wife and learned she lived in Detroit, I was not looking forward to having to move here. After finding a great job, I did. It turns out it wasn't as bad as I originally thought it would be but a lot of the stereotypes do exist.
The main city and close surrounding suburbs are in a state of plight. The city is an eyesore. Especially compared to similar cities in the "Rust Belt" like Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Not that those cities are pretty (Pittsburgh is now nice), but Detroit takes the cake in unsightliness. This is contrasted by Windor, Canada, right across the river which is a beautiful and nice town. Some of the surrounding suburbs are nice and the culture is definitely diverse.
I was proud at how nice downtown looked during the Super Bowl. But the

Detroit scared the hell out of me - 8/19/2006
I originally come from one of the poorest, roughest, most crime-infested cities in Europe (Liverpool) and it is a total paradise next to Detroit. I can't understand how things have gotten so bad there. Liverpool looks and feels like a bad place in a wealthy, developed country (and is anyway being massively regenerated). Detroit is just Third World. This is odd, as the US economy is a lot larger than the Brit one and many US cities seem very pleasant places and have not taken this apparent road to total ruin. Detroit gives you very litte sense that outside the city limits is a large and affluent society. I would not wish to apportion blame or make claims as to where the fault lies. But for the casual foreign visitor who is just blowing through, Detroit is a frightening, dirty and dangerous mess. I never got that impression in any other US city, including some that people bitch about. Chicago can get pretty hairy...but in general it's a great city. Exactly how and when Detroit

A wasteland - 8/3/2006
I agree with most comments about detroit however SOME are silly. I had thought the comment about finding dead bodies in the street was silly and untrue. However, last week a teenage girl ran over a dead body in southwest detroit and drug it for a block thinking it was a bag of trash. I cant imagine anyone wanting to relocate here unless they got offered a great job but I doubt it. There are no jobs. This is the first time in my adult life I have seen things so bad here. I have been laid off twice in 4 yrs. I am now losing another job in a month. Everyone is suffering. It starts with the auto industry slipping. I had once read that 70% of jobs in MI are auto related. I thought this figure might be wrong but when I thought about it, most people I know do something that is auto related. Whether it be working in the plants, part plants, logistics, design, etc. If you are a nurse, then you will make a living here. There is a shortage in the health profession. It is all having a trickle

The Evils that Haunt Detroit - 7/23/2006
Like most people have said, Detroit was once a great town. And as long as the auto industry prospered, so did the city. Detroit backed the industry at all costs, most notably public transportation, and now we are all suffering. Jobs are being lost by the thousands, people are leaving the area like rats from a sinking ship. You WILL NOT find a good paying job here unless you have years of experience in a specialized area. Otherwise, prepare to flip burgers or wash cars.
Also, racism is a problem here. And its more due to white people being ignorant and afraid of black people. White flight did not occur because black people were moving into the city. Black people moved into the city because the crashing property values in the 1960s and 1970s, because of white flight, meant that Detroit was one of the few places in the city that a black family could buy a house. And, by the way, anybody with any sort of sense and intellegence would tell you that your skin color

The rest of Thorough report - 4/29/2006
A popular place near the city is Royal Oak. It has continued to transform and attract a younger, artsy, liberal crowd. The Detroit Zoo (in Royal Oak) is pretty nice as well.
The schools in Detroit are in a constant state of decay and corruption. Many of the surrounding communities, however, have some of the best schools you'll find anywhere! From what I've seen, Detroit doesn't experience any more crime than any other city of its size and age. Of course there's crime, but it doesn't really affect the outlying areas. I have plenty of friends who attended Wayne State Univ which is downtown. They have a story or two, but they felt safe most of the time. Even so, going downtown, you'll want to stay on the main roads.
Traffic is pretty bad during morning and afternoon/evening commutes, but no worse than other large cities. The metroparks that are located in suburban areas are good places for physical activity. Housing isn't cheap, but you'll be able
