Detroit. Please do not move there . - 2/21/2007
My mother(born in Columbus, Ga) moved to Detroit to live with my Uncle. Later, she married the man I call my father(born in Bluefield, WV).
Step-DaDs do not get enough credit. He gave me his name and knowledge of survival. This knowledge was not good enough to keep us out of harms way.
1. My mother was mugged twice before she met my father.
2. My mother's car was stolen when she went to the store for some bread.
3. A Stranger knocked on the door claiming to fix our TV while my father
wasn't home. It was just my mother, sister, and I at home at the time.
4. Someone tried to break-in the house while I was home.
5. Someone broke in my Parent's home a year after I went off to
the Marine Corp.
6. Finally, my father was robbed at gun point while waiting in the car
for the barber shop to open.
All this happen within seven years.
There is a God because I now live in Pensacola FL. Hurricanse vs. Crime.

Detroit is bad... but not that bad - 1/6/2007
I was just reading some of the previous comments on Detroit and I must say some of you people are just flat-out wrong. You cannot just stereotype an entire city because of some instances. One writer wrote that you may not want to raise a family in Detroit because your children may become crackheads, prostitutes, etc. Well, I am raising a family in Detroit. I have 3 children one of which just graduated from high school (Surprised?), as did all of her close friends. My 2 younger children are thriving in school (not public, charter) and in their extracurricular activities. As far as I can tell, none of my children or their friends, or my friends children are headed towards becoming crackheads, prostitutes, or any other scourge of society. I am an African-American woman, who is married and gainfully employed. Not all black people are poor, uneducated and raising hoodlum

Detroit is on a downward spiral - 1/6/2007
All of the favorable comments that I read about Detroit praised the downtown area. Well I have lived in Detroit for all of my 36 years and I have never LIVED downtown. The elected officials all boast about all that is being done downtown, but there is relatively nothing done in the neighborhoods where the majority of us live. Not everyone judges a city based on what there is to do. I'll settle for city services and good schools. Detroit is on a downward spiral and I can't see my kids growing up here and finding decent employment, because as we all know, the auto industry as we know it is out of here. My family and I are out of here as

A different experience. Not necessarily a good one - 12/7/2006
I've lived in and around Detroit for 30 yrs. It's not so good. There are a lot(950,000) of poor people in the city. Not much business growth. Worst foreclosue rate. #2 fattest people in America. Probably some of the most unhealthy too. That includes me. Doh! The weather is not good. Gray a lot. Not many nice parks. Not a lot of people walking around. Especially for a city of 900,000+ people. There is not a single Target or major Dept store anywhere in the city limits of Detroit. They probably don't want any part of it. Auto business are shrinking. Detroit doesn't have anything else to fall back on. Can't even forsee what it would be. I think they should legalize sports gambling and possibly even legalize mary jane. It's about all they can do. At least it would become somewhat of a destination for those reasons. Otherwise what else does it offer over any other major city? There is no riverfront development although it's been on the river for 300 years! Yeah, a slab of concrete doesn't

Detroit : the goods and bads - 11/15/2006
I grew up in a small town in MI, and moved to downtown Detroit for medical school. The positives of this city: Overall, pretty nice people. Lots of interesting bars/clubs/restaurants/concert venues in the downtown and midtown areas, pick up an "Essential Detroit Guide" to find what you're looking for. Sports are huge here. Belle Isle is a gorgeous island park in the Detroit river. The downtown is being remade, and great strides have been made in just the 3 years I've lived here, in order for it to continue people will have to buy all these lofts they're building. The 1930's downtown architecture of the "art deco" genre is very cool as well. Lots of history in this town.
Negatives: Outside of the downtown/midtown area all the way to the suburbs (in kind of a horseshoe shape), the city is in a perpetual state of decay. High crime, I mean like gunshot wounds EVERY night(a great place to learn medicine unfortunately for the people of Detroit - plenty of penetrating trauma

Detroit - 11/1/2006
Although I do live in the burbs, I love Detroit. I love going to concerts and such at Cobo and Ford Field. I love Greektown, the ren cen, demf, the people mover, and more than that I love going to the DIA and Science Center.
As for jobs, I am graduating in December and most people in my class already have jobs for January. I for one, was offered a job back in September. I don't agree with the flipping burgers comment, you get what job you are prepared for. It is a beautiful city, if you know where you want to go. There is also a large educated community with diverse opinions and ideas that just may change everyone else's view of Detroit.
Yes, there are bad areas of Detroit, what big city doesn't have that? I saw way more aggressive bums in Chicago and D.C. I was scared of them, I am not frightened walking around in the commerce areas of

Detroit is a Great City, No Doubt About It - 10/21/2006
From architecture to sporting zeal, Detroit is a city rich in things too good to keep quiet about. If you like cars or good music, this city boasts heritage sites requiring a pilgrimage or three. The urban core of Detroit is home to the third largest collection of pre-WWII skyscrapers in the nation - and perhaps one of the most diverse architectural collections anywhere in North America. Auto plants still dot the landscape, but its the historic collections found at the Detroit Historical Museum and Henry Ford Museum that demand a visit. On your journeys about town, you'll also want to stop in at the Motown Museum, a large house where all of the great Motown songs were recorded by Detroit artists. Before cruising up to Somerset Mall in suburban Troy or Eight Mile, to drive the route Eminem was singing about on his CDs and in his movie, stop in at one of the many outstanding restaurants dotting downtown and its environs. There's Slow's, an ecelectic smokehouse west of downtown, Small

Is Detroit Getting Better? - 10/19/2006
Man--I hate having to go to Detroit for business which I have to do quite often. The city is bleak. It has some great neighborhoods but everyone seems to be focused on the downtown area which is probably one of the worst in the states. No one walks here. There is little, if any, mass transit, and the attitudes of the folks about their town is miserable. They rant about a new business opening up downtown like it is a moon-landing. And... the burbs.. I won't even go there except to say that they think this place named Royal Oak is hip!! It looks like a typical suburb to me but I guess when folks are desperate, anything is acceptable. Now--with all that said, I am pulling for the Tigers. For God's sake---they need something other than their

Rome wasn't built cont'd - 10/11/2006
This site seems to be attracting pessimists and negative people. I thought that it was only people from Detroit but I looked at other places. Take a look at the postings for Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia, and even New York. Some people who are commenting on Detroit do not even live here or either moved too long ago to have an opinion of how the city is today vs the late 80's and early 90's. For an unbiased accountI suggest looking at the site www.detroitrising.com. It is a site by a Detroit native that highlights "the good, the bad, and the ugly". It also have links to other cities. I couldn't help but take offense to some of the postings because they were direct attacks on the people in Detroit. Also I can't help but notice that some of the criticism is racially motivated. Someone actually made the comment "The city did not began to decline until the Negros moved in". The politically correct word is African Americans or simply black. So for the
