Absolutely terrible city. - 4/1/2008
I have lived in Detroit and the surrounding suburbs for the past 10 years. The city is actually fun when you are in that 20 something party stage. There are a lot of cool bars and nightclubs. However, Detroit being such a crime-ridden dump, don't expect to see many women.

It seemed the city was making a change for the better in the past ten years. A new baseball stadium, football stadium, and some new loft condos. Paying $8 bucks a beer watching the Tigers is one thing, but the Lions is quite the other.

If you are planning to move to the area you pretty much have to live in the suburbs. Detroit has terrible crime, a crumbling infrastructure, the worst schools with the highest drop-out rate in the country, and a lot of rude lazy workers in almost every service business.

The Mayor of this fine town is currently indicted on 8 felony's and the city doesn't see the need to fire him. This is a man who allegedly cheated on his wife, fired Read More

Quality of life - 3/24/2008
Detroit always seems to get the worst rap possible. This much I can tell you ..i was born in Detroit in 1946. I have lived in the tri-county area my entire life. This city is much better then many think. It bottomed out in the years after the 1967 riots & thru the 1980's. It is reclaiming its Downtown block by block.Look at the number of bldg. permits over the last 6 years compared to the previous 30yrs.Once the city settles up with getting a new mayor it should be able to make further Read More

Detroit is a POOR place to live.... - 11/2/2007

Detroit is what it is - 10/20/2007
I lived in the city for about 25 of my 29 years. The crime problem is overblown, though many of the people I went to school with (K thru 12) are dead, in prison, welfare moms, etc. Detroit-bashers need to realize that most people who are the victims of violent crime are people involved in illegal activity, especially drug dealing. Random acts of violence are fairly rare, even in Detroit. Just don't deal drugs, rob dope houses, or get involved in other forms of vice. The only crime I experienced during my 25 years of residency was when the hubcaps were stolen off of my rental car. That being said, compared to other large cities, Detroit is pretty grim, especially on the majority of the southwest and southeast sides. You couldn't pay me any amount of money to go into those areas after dark. Lots of gangs, dope-dealing, and other typical inner-city problems. I finally moved out of the city to the suburbs this summer of 07. Ironically, it wasn't because of crime. The primary reason Read More

Detroit is a good place to be ... from! - 8/11/2007
Having lived in the City almost the majority of my life, I can only say, I'm glad I got out when I did, and I just wish the rest of my family would get out. It's going to hell in a handbasket.

Yes, downtown Detroit is a beautiful place to visit after hours, and yes, there is a lot to do, for family, culture, entertainment, history and so much more.

But it isn't a place to live. It's a place to visit.

Just don't stay too Read More
