A step back in time - 4/21/2015
Houghton,MI is located in the middle of Lake Superior on the Keweenaw Peninsula. It was a boom town with the copper barons in the late 1800's and today it struggles to modernize. Michigan Tech University adds flavor to this this homogenous community and most cultural events are related to the university. The downtown is being restored, but the greatest obstacle it faces is the divided highway that cuts through the downtown business district. The highway divides the city's residential area from its business district, its public library, and its waterfront. Since MI has NO laws regarding pedestrians and crosswalks, this highway is dangerous to cross even at the best of times, and if you are disabled or a senior, it is quite dangerous. Cutting across the continuous stream of traffic is difficult at best because thee are no crosswalks where cars will stop for pedestrians. The city made the Outside Magazine list of great places to live close to nature, and living here IS beautiful in many Read More

Great place to live - 4/4/2013
For those who are interested in a laid-back community with low cost of living, rich human history, surrounded by impressive natural beauty, Houghton is the place. The local economy currently rests mostly on the universities (Michigan Tech, a competitive research/teaching institution, and Finlandia University in Hancock), as well as tourism.

Given its isolation, the area is relatively quite vibrant, with many cultural and social events, organized through numerous student groups, community organizations, and the university itself. There is a large international graduate student population at Michigan Tech, too, which also helps to infuse cultural vibrancy into the area.

Winters are typically very harsh (regularly more than 150" snow, sometimes 300"), though opportunities for outdoor recreation abound. If you love winter, this might be heaven. Summers are gorgeous and summer days are long, with the opportunity for many stunning hikes hidden along the Lake Read More

Map is incomplete - 8/23/2009
The 49931 zip code map to display Houghton is misleading. It implies that Isle Royale, isolated in the northern reaches of Lake Superior, is the area covered by this Zip code. Isle Royale National Park's headquarters is in Houghton, therefore it is theoretically proper to include it as being covered by Zip code 49931; however the permanent population of Houghton is on the mainland, just to the south of Hancock (49930). For display purposes, it would be best to simply ignore Isle Royale and display the mainland area only; Isle Royale is completely within Isle Royale National Park (www.nps.gov/isro), thus there is no year-round population, no schools, no permanent private housing, no roads, etc, on the Island.
Bill Fink is a former superintendent of Isle Royale National Park, and a former president of the Keweenaw Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Call me at 906-370-9597 if you have further Read More

The secret U.P. - 9/3/2006
Houghton/Hancock is an outdoor lover's paradise with a respectable university to keep the community young at heart. Although off the beaten path, the low cost of living more than makes up for some of the things larger areas possess. All in all, a good place to live if you would like to work in a university setting at a reasonable Read More
