The downtown is charming. Touristy at times in the summer and fall. Traffic can be a bear during those days. Lots of antique stores, lots of vintage houses. Water adds to the wonderful views. Living there, I think I might have liked it better in the more affluent neighborhoods. There's sort of hit and miss housing market. You might find a wonderful Victorian sitting right next to a neighbor with a rusted out truck sitting in the backyard. I personally liked the place but for the occasional dog pack that followed me home. No, that's not a metaphor. At least when I was there, dogs ran freely through the area. But, it can be quaint, charming. Affordable, yes, not so many convenient big city amenities. But, it's not meant to be

Stillwater is one of the most beautiful towns in the upper midwest. The view of the St. Croix River and the hills are reminiscent of the Rhine River Valley in Germany (minus the castles). This city has excellent medical facilities, arts and entertainment, many churches, and beautiful scenic drives in every direction. Cost of living can be expensive, but affordable places exist if you're willing to look hard. The town is beautiful in all seasons, and the people are friendly and everyone seems happy here.

Statistical information is interesting. Having been born in Stillwater in the 50's and mostly raised here, I find the growing population less desirable. Stillwater used to have a viable downtown shopping area and now it is simply a destination for tourist with little desire or reason for hometown people to go downtown. We have a beautiful riverfront town but it is congested with cars running through the main street on their way back to the State of WI, leaving our downtown filled with car exhaust.
