mississippi--more a state of mind than a state of - 3/28/2007
It's hot[and I mean hot] and humid in the summers, but the winters are generally mild with rare snow. We're about equidistant from atlanta, memphis, dallas and new orleans [200 or so miles]. The cost of living is reasonable and in spite of what the national media seem to report most of us get along just fine. There is a disproportinate number of poor people, so there are problems with crime, but most violent crime is confined to that socioeconomic group. Taxes seem to be higher for similar reasons. Healthcare is of high quality and as affordable or more so than in other parts of the country. Recreational activities vary depending on interest and income but hunting, fishing, equine activities, gardening ,etc are some of the perennial favorites. The ozark mts. of arkansas, the smokey mts. of tennessee/georgia and the panhandle of florida are all within an easy day's drive.
