Rolla is a great place to live, but it is getting worse. There are too many outsiders, imports, transplants from other states, interlopers moving in here. All they want to do is complain about the lack of a mall, the lack of "things to do," the lack of "serious shopping experiences," the number of churches and church-going people, the lack of a Starbucks, and on and on. Why I love living in Rolla - 3/26/2008
I am a Southern California native, lived there for 35 years, then moved to MN for 7 years and then to MO, first in Salem and now in Rolla. One of the main reasons I left Ca was because of the crime and the over population. I had a daughter and was fearful to send her to school. MN was a nice state, but too cold, Salem lacked job opportunities but Rolla has been a nice fit for our family. The people are friendly, but your attitude counts towards that. I agree there could be more industry because jobs could be better, but Rolla is like living in CA when I was a kid. You don't really worry too much about your kids, they can ride their bike or visit their friends. Yes, drugs are here, they're everywhere, I grew up in the 60's and 70's before we knew that much about it's dangers. Rolla is a smaLl rural community where people know your name and your family. in the eyes of a college student - 3/3/2008
I am a graduate of UM-Rolla, or whatever its new name is now, from 2005. I did have friends from the ages of 25-80 in town over the years. I am proud of have graduated from that college, the best and only good engineering school in the state - beats Mizzou and Wash U for applicable, old-fashion engineering. I did get a physics degree too from Mizzou.

I liked Rolla as a student since it allowed me to focus on school and none of that college life. The male-female ratio is much better than it is now then years ago. The housing is good and below $500 SW of campus. There is one true bar and several sports bars. If you are a senior in high school with little to no funding, wanting to graduate from Rolla and get a job paying $55k or more with just a bachelor's degree, this is what I would do. Either stay at home, take 50-60 credit hours of courses in three semesters, transfer to Rolla and graduate in the next 5 semesters. OR go to Mizzou, enjoy college, then transfer to Rolla.

We have only lived here 9 years, and, are very disappointed with the problems that seem to plague this "little village." The City government is basically run by the "GOOD OLE BOY" system. As in most "little Village's" there are those behind the scenes who seem to guide and shape the course the "little village" will take, most of which has been at great expense to the taxpayer's. We have the highest sales tax rate in the area, housing prices are inflated, real estate taxes are going up, and utilities are outrageous (and they are also taxed beyond belief).
There are similar communities in our area who are growing and flourishing. New businesses are opening, schools are being built and the communities are thriving. Rolla, on the other hand, for all of the taxes, etc., does not grow, does not flourish, and taxes it's citizens more every year. Rolla is located right off of Interstate 44 in Missouri.
