The College World Series and Henry Doorly Zoo are - 5/8/2006
Omaha is growing, with a little over 400,000 residents now. Like some of the bigger cities, Omaha has lots of suburb cities that make up about 600,000+ residents combined with Omaha. Omaha is good in the sense that it experiences all 4 seasons, although spring is quite short. Winters can be harsh here as blowing snow and ice are a factor. One downfall is that summers are extremely hot at times and unfortunately, very muggy. Overall however, the weather is not too bad. The midwest also experiences tornados, which can be quite frightening. There is an increase in the job market and Omaha is steadily growing out west. Before too long, it seems like we might run right down and merge with Lincoln like the big city of Chicago! LOL Omaha also has a wonderful ZOO which houses the largest indoor jungle and indoor swamp. The ZOO also has a desert inside a large dome, a bat cave, gorilla valley, and an aquarium that boasts a tunnel that you can walk through with all of the fish Read More

Boring? Who are you people? - 5/3/2006
I don't understand how people can say that Omaha is "boring" or much of anything bad about the city. It has tons of big and small concert and play venues, including one of the best, fastest-growing local music scenes in the country and the largest community playhouse in the country, one of the best zoos in the country (one magazine even ranked it the #1 Family attraction--above DisneyWorld and DisneyLand), nice people, little traffic, cheap homes compared to any city that could be considered "major," an excellent historical downtown area, more good restaurants per capita than just about any city, family-oriented activities such as free outdoor concerts and Shakespeare plays in the summer, fireworks displays in July and on New Years, and "family days" where you can get into the Western Heritage, Children's, and Joslyn Art museums for free, no casinos to bring in the white trash from Council Bluffs, several excellent state parks within 30 minutes, including Mahoney State Park (rated in Read More

easy to network - 2/8/2006
Not a transient community---provincial area. Everyone knows everyone, they all went to high school together. networking is easy once you are in. Good Midwestern values----irreverance was common among those i met and hung with. Hard drinking city---if you like to party this is a good spot due to long winters and blue collar environment. yellow pages listed 175 bars. This seems high for a city this size. Lots of Irish Catholics with traditional fatalistic behaviors (Drinking). Little outdoor activity and not very health conscious. Good people though. Surprisingly diverse restaurant choices in Dundee area and Old Read More

Ideal for family - 1/9/2006
What more could you ask for. As stated elsewhere, there are plenty of great activities in Omaha, and I suspect that two of the other comments are fairly old. Omaha has recently added a new convention center, and a new performing arts center, and both are tremendous venues for great performances. The downtown is booming, with hundreds of housing units being added on a near-monthly basis. Schools are excellent, with neighborhood elementary schools, and magnet middle and high schools. Besides all of the great attractions, and living opportunities, Omaha is pretty much a 20 minute town. You can get almost anywhere from the center of the city that quickly. In the 20 years I've lived here (85 to 05) there has never been a significant slowdown in the economy, the town has grown substantially, and the amenities have multiplied. The airport is 5 minutes from downtown, and very quick to get through, and Omaha sits on Interstates 80 and 29 so its an easy travel hub. the weather may not be ideal Read More

A great place to visit but I would not want to liv - 12/17/2005
After 30 plus years, we have finally left Omaha and moved to Florida. Omaha was a great place to raise our children. I never could understand people that said there was nothing to do, or it was a boring town, or whatever… what do you want? Omaha has more great restaurants than most cities in the country, the finest zoo in the country, a great symphony, good museum, plenty of clubs and entertainment venues, some wonderful parks, relatively good infrastructure and mass transit (could use some improvement there), all the amenities of any “big” city. Now the bad, the taxes in Omaha and Nebraska are beyond ridiculous that alone was nearly enough to prompt our move, miserable barely describes the winters there, snow removal on most side streets in town was close to non-existent. The “good old boy” network of city and county government stifled small business growth; if you were not a multibillion-dollar corporation they could give massive tax breaks to so you could move people in Read More
