Moved after seven years - 12/26/2006
I moved to the Southeast after seven years in Omaha. The main reasons for my move was to be in a nicer climate, closer to the coast, and out of the Mid-West. Omaha is not awful, but the city is eternally continental with extreme climatic changes. The city can't change it's location, but it seems to make the best of it's situation. It has some of the best steakhouses and really any type of food. The people are nice enough, although their moods change with the weather. Taxes are very high for what you get in return. The city and state lack any natural amenities and no efforts are made to build or create things people want or need to enjoy life. The area lakes are small, shallow, artificial, and polluted. The surrounding country side is all farm and prairie -- no forests, mountains, coast, etc. With the exception of the zoo and a paltry childrens museum, there is little to do for kids. Adults have a few more options with various museums, shops, restaurants, bars/clubs. The Read More

weather or not? - 11/4/2006
If you don't care about humidity live here. If you like not being able sip iced tea on your patio because it is too humid or too cold or just plain wet move here. If you an indoor hermit that doesn't like the the warmth and dryness of a southwestern sun move here. If it doesn't matter that you can not make predictable outdoor plans move here. If you are a bookworm move here. If not realizing predictable 10%+ annual appreciable gains on your real estate does not bother you then move here. If not having any professional sports doesn't matter to you then move here. And,finally if paying more than twice in property taxes what they do in many southwestern cities doesn'tbother you then by all means move here and buy my house so I can go back home to Arizona where I belong! small city, small town feel - 9/24/2006
Omaha, Nebraska is for those who want a bigger city with a small town atmosphere with conservative roots. It may be best for families, although the reputation for the school district is not a strong one at this time. There are many trails for biking, running and walking. There are three main malls that have a variety of stores from the upscale to the general. The downtown has the Old Market which includes a variety of shops and good places to eat. Although these perks are all available, I am not drawn to stay here. I am used to larger cities and diversity everywhere I go. I miss Read More

Friendly, clean and conservative - 7/15/2006
I'm from Southern California and have visited Omaha twice because I have a friend who lives there (he's been trying to get me to move there for the past 20 or so years). I had a positive first impression of the area---the people were friendly, most of the city is pretty clean, and I felt it had a laid-back, small-townish, conservative feel to it. I also had the BEST steak dinner of my life both times I visited. I haven't completely ruled out moving there, but it's going to take some time. I know the area has a strong economy with low unemployment, which is good to know. The housing prices and apartment rents are VERY reasonable compared with how they are here in California. What does concern me, however, is how extreme the weather can get there, especially in the winter, being that I never experienced a 4-season climate. I definitely want to make another visit to Omaha in the near future; it's been TOO long! Finally, Omaha seems very family-oriented. I'm wondering what the singles Read More

Great Place to Live - 6/28/2006
Omaha is a wonderful city on the rise. While it's not a big city, it certainly is not a small "cow town" like our NY friends on the east coast would lead you to believe. Omaha has plenty to do for entertainment and for work. It's a great place to raise children, both for education and for outdoor activities. There is information readily available on Omaha on this site, as well as through your favorite search engine. Just type in "Omaha" and see what pops up. If you get the chance, I'd suggest considering Omaha as your place to Read More

We live in a condominium association located n a semi-private golf course. The area is very quite as we are isolated from major thoroughfares, but are withing 1 1/2 miles of Interstate 80. The golf course is challenging and well maintained. There is little or no crime in our particular area and the crime rate in Omaha is reasonably low. Housing costs are considered Read More
