Depends on what you're looking for, but Reno sure - 12/12/2007
IF you aspire to live in an over-priced cookie-cutter-McMansion in an endless sprawl of overpriced suburban developments, be a good little consumer in endless strip-mall hell, drive a jacked up truck with a vanity-plate (which you'll drive everywhere as there's no real public transport), and possibly develop a meth-addiction: IF this is what you seek, Reno might be a good choice.

Ok, there are some things I like about this crazy place: As long as you're happy driving everywhere, it's pretty easy to get around, and no real traffic issues to speak of. Plenty of parks and trails in and around Reno, with much outdoor recreation within an hours drive - lakes, mountains and desert. A developing arts and culture scene. Plenty of opportunity to start something cool (arts organisation, non-profit, etc) cuz chances are, Reno hasn't got one yet of whatever it is you want to start. And the best thing about Reno? So easy to leave Read More

The "new" California - 10/30/2007
Reno, at its peak, was a quaint town with no bugs and some nice scenery. It also is close to some nice snow skiing and lakes. But even while I lived there in the late 80's and early 90's, the gambling scene was a real eyesore on the community. It brought in transients, homeless people, drug addicts, thieves, gangs and anyone who had no skills and wanted to work in the casinos. When California became too expensive for people to live there anymore, they flooded the Reno area. The only thing that changed, was now the town is overcrowded to the max. Californians brought their "no elbow room" culture to Reno, and it can not handle the overpopulation. The infrastructure wasn't made to support that many people. Now mountains are being mowed down to make room for more housing. Shotgun homes are being built. The traffic is a mess. Polution is a mess. And the worst part is that the influx of Californians has driven home prices through the roof!! Now people have to pay California Read More

Low crime compared to larger cities, good outdoor - 10/17/2007
Don't listen to John and his warning. 1. D'Andrea is not a high end community for Reno, so it is not suprising that he complained of the criminal activity near. 2. Don't move to Reno if you wanted Gambling. 3. Crime is silly, read our newspaper www.rgj.com and then read the LAtimes or Oakland news. 4. I moved away from a large city due to the homeless, drive by shootings, car jackings ... i.e. Oakland CA whose horrid news we get in Reno. Nice neighborhoods in Reno? Check the Montreaux 89511 zip code...D'Andrea, give me a break, that's so not hip or where the money is at.
Reno has mountains, a big blue lake near called L. Tahoe, ample outdoor activities for the healthy outdoors Marmot, REI, Patagonia types...move here if you recognize those name brands and want to have a healthy life style and not pay taxes. Remember, no income tax means lack of free social services which means very little homeless hanging around for long - they get on the bus to CA tax state next door. Read More

PLEASE head my warning!!! - 6/3/2007
Reno is the worst city in america. There are no jobs, trashy people, awful weather, isolation, and CASINOS. Now when i say casinos I don't mean LV Style ones, I mean the kind uf dumps that the trash that can't afford vegas go to. Prior to when I moved up there I was told of the small town feel, but once I arrived I found that it was worse than my previous and current residence of LA. The education was also awfuland my son went to the best school. the city is very economically diverse in the worst way. In my upscale neighborhood of D'Andrea there was gang infestation only a block away! Also if your job requires you to travel good luck because RNO flights are sparatic and flights don't go past Chicago. This means no international flights despite its name . These flights are also very expenisve. Many times I had to cancel meeting in Sacramento because there are no flights and in the winter the passes are Read More

Fun place to live if you can afford it - 5/2/2007
Reno is changing so fast its unbelievable. I like Reno because there's alot to do for such a small city from day trips to Tahoe to going to the rodeo, balloon race, barbecue cook-off, and casinos for when everything else closes at night. What I don't like is the increasingly hot weather during the summer with weeks of 100 degree temperatures and the inversion weather during the winter when the smog from the city including all the chimney smoke turns the valley floor air yellow and burns my throat (couple of weeks each year). Cost of living has shot up while the wage rate has remained stagnant so its no place for first time home owners. Its almost impossible to make a living wage if you are unskilled and can't pool your incomes with other working family members. Reno has been hit fairly hard by the real estate slump and "for sale" signs are all over the place. Bottom line, Reno is a nice place to live if you already have assets and want to be part of a growing city where things are Read More

Ready to move elsewhere - 4/22/2007
I moved to Reno a year ago with my job. The proximity to Tahoe is the only thing I've found to be positive about this city. It seems that the city's street system hasn't been able to keep up with the population boom over the last few years. I-80 has been under construction in Sparks for god knows how long, and seems like it will never be completed. Traffic can be terrible at times for a small city. Reno has the most inconsiderate and rude drivers I've ever seen in the 7 states I've lived in over the past 12 years. Once out of the car, the people here are actually fairly nice. Downtown Reno is full of rundown motels, casinos, and trashy people contributing to Nevada's roaring crystal meth problem. Overall, the locals seem uneducated and crude, but friendly. Reno hasn't been the worst place I've ever lived, but I'll be happy to see it in the rear view Read More

Sunny, impressive variety of entertainment and out - 11/16/2006
Reno is a fast growing city with a great history. The people are uncommonly friendly and helpful. Guests travel from all over the U.S. and many other countries. Art museums, symphony, ballet. Ethnic, fun and fine dining. And of course the casinow. Easy access to international airport. Great public transportation. Excellent health facilities. University of Nevada Reno offers excellent education and sports Read More

ready to depart - 9/29/2006
i moved to reno more than a year ago from california. i dig this city, but i am ready to leave it now. the gambling is such a strong lure and my habit for it is increasing. the locals here are very trashy and unrefined. the surroundings are beauteous and the weather is exceptional here. it gets really hot in the summer, and very cold and snowy in the winter. i love being less than an hour away from all parts of lake tahoe. there are plenty of top-notch ski resorts near reno if you're into that. the diversity of reno is increasing and that is not a bad thing. the crystal meth/speed problem here is despicable and many of the young citizens who abuse the drug look so worn out and decrepid. i know i don't belong here and it's so not where i'm going to settle, but i won't pretend like i'm not fond of this place. reno is so Read More
