What I like (and Don't Like) about living here - 11/23/2010
I am originally from Massachusetts, I have never lived anywhere else and moved here sort of as a "trial". But I am getting homesick and thus am relocating back east next month.
Pros:the summer is beautiful, if you like sunny days (which I do)
TONS of stuff to do outdoors (biking, hiking, jogging, skiing)
overall friendly, laidback atmosphere
easy to navigate (i.e. no windy roads like the northeast)
wide open spaces, which I have always enjoyed, although since living here I have come to appreciate the foliage and greenery from back easy--also, the Sierra Nevadas make for some beautiful scenery

Cons: well, for me, I realize I CANNOT ever live within an hour drive to the beach. I LOVE the ocean. Lake Tahoe is BEAUTIFUL, don't get me wrong, but it is not the same.
also...the winters here are HORRIBLE. And coming from Boston, I believe I am a good authority on this. I was here last winter, and I would take a Boston winter any day over it. Read More

Pros and Cons of Living in Reno: - 10/26/2010
I have lived in the Reno area for 21+ years. Here are the Cons: Downtown is dirty, homeless, bars, casino controlled, not family oriented, adult only community, concentration of crime. State has no idea how to fund or improve primary education- yet. Downtown and core of city has over 2,000 gang members. Currently poor area for jobs, high unemployment, ranks bottom of states in most social criterias. Reno is alpine looking about eight months of the year with about four being brown, brown and not pretty- the summer and early Fall time period. No real hot or real cold.

Here are the Pros: Almost all areas surrounding the city core, including many older and all newer housing subdivisions are excellent places to live, sans Sun Valley area. Low crime in the burbs. No environmental issues to speak of- water and air quality are very good most of the time here. Excellent, top notch recreation. Tahoe Basin 20 minutes from South Reno. Virginia City same time to the SE of Reno. Read More

Great for young families getting priced out of Cal - 10/13/2010
My family moved to South Reno from Southern California three years ago, and it has provided opportunities we never had before.

We are saving roughly $30,000 per year by living just 30 miles east of the California border. That meant my wife could afford to stay at home with our kids instead of returning to work immediately after they were born.

It meant we could buy our first home, which is only three years old, within one year of living here for only $200,000. Our house payment is $1000, which is half what we were paying for rent in California.

We pay no sales tax, no corporate tax, 6.35% sales tax and the cost of things like registering vehicles is a fraction of what it is in California.

We are 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe. We hike, kayak, camp, ski, fish or do some other outdoor activity virtually every weekend.

The people here do not have any social skills and seem to go out of their way to be rude. You can be sitting at a table at the library using your laptop pc and they will sit down accross from you and bump your pc. Then they start bumping the table. I live in nice apartments near the river. The residents here leave their trash all over the place. You go down to the pool and somebodie's dog starts barking and barking. People in reno esepecially on craiglsts like to rant how messed up reno is. to understand reno , you have to break it down.reno is not the biggest little city anymore it is the biggest litle sprawling city. icame to reno for the 24 hour bus sytem. in 12 years, i have not met anyone on the bus worth knowing- this is not nyc nor seattle but maybe in this gogle apple world, reno is actually better than on r thinks. when you think of america en toto , it is somehwat of a nightmare. so reno sudddenly loks pretty good. i f you are gay or lesbioann, expect to be disapointed-there is np gay/lesbioan community. if you are Jewish , expect to be nt eh abyss. the 3 synagoges en topto are pretty lame- . it is not there fault. Overall Quality of Life - 5/21/2010
Retiring or working, you'll do well here. If you're raising kids this region is rich in wonderful outdoor rec-type opportunities that are proven development enhancements; however be prepared to be very involved in their education. UNR's Millinium Program is unfortunately becoming insolvent. For recent empty-nesters, great seasonal experiences await. The region's history alone is a treasure; proximity to Lake Tahoe & Yosemite - entire chapters in themselves; a major airport and small-town feel. The myriad promotions by local business's strengthen community.
As our country struggles forward, this particular city offers daily rewards and reminders of our struggle's values.  Read More

A pleasant surprise in Reno - 4/3/2010
We recently moved to Reno and have found a very close knit and engaged community. Behind the recreational opportunities (casinos, shows, etc.)that it is famous for, Reno is a creative, progressive community with a very pleasant life style that is not obvious to outsiders. Also, while it is a high desert climate, the winter and summer weather is mild for those accustomed to the extremes in most of the eastern and southern US. For those who love the outdoors - winter and summer - the high Sierra and Lake Tahoe are literally minutes away. Read More
