Keene, NH is a small city located in southwestern New Hampshire that is known for its vibrant downtown and outdoor recreation activities. The city has been praised for its numerous restaurants, boutique shops, art galleries, museums, and entertainment venues. Whether you’re looking for a good place to eat, shop, or take in an event there’s something for everyone in Keene. Visitors have most praised the city for its beautiful views of the Monadnock Mountains and the Ashuelot River which runs through the town. The area also offers plenty of outdoor activities including hiking trails, fishing spots and ski resorts nearby. Residents are also happy with the wide variety of local festivals and events held throughout the year that bring people from all over together to celebrate. All in all, Keene is a great place to visit with plenty to do year round.

Live free or die...trying. Cute town with very little violent crime but the cost of living is ridiculous for what you get! Forget ever owning a home unless you are willing to pay around $300,000 for a decent place. Even if you do find a good price it is probably already bought by someone willing to pay cash or bid tens of thousands of dollars above the asking price. Rent just keeps going up and now average for a 2 bedroom is between $1350- $2000 a month for nothing special (no perks) . Also very hard to find housing that will take pets. Job market is a joke with mostly fast food and minimum wage jobs so don't expect COL to match what you are paying. There are no taxes but NH sucks the money out of you in other ways. How do people survive you may ask? Welfare, food stamps, and income based housing for a large percentage, the other group has been here forever so had houses when the market didn't inflate to what it is now. Pros and Cons of Keene, NH - 10/16/2008
Here is a quick run down of the pros and cons of Keene, NH from a native.

Pros
-Small City feel with quaint downtown and a generally safe area.
-For its small size there is a decent amount of culture here
-Plenty of outdoor activities
-Good place to raise kids
-2 hours to Boston, Seacoast; 4 hours to NYC
-Good (though pricy) school system
-Great location for families and older folks
-No Sales or Income Taxes

Cons
-Very high property taxes
-Even with the relative culture, it is still pretty sleepy
-Lack of economic opportunites often forces young people to move away
-New England winters (unless you are a skier, which would make this a pro)
-Many "yankee" attitudes - often seen as unfriendly until you get to know people.Read More
