Nothing Has Changed - 5/4/2013
I was hopeful after the mayoral election in 2011, which also saw a Democrat elected as Alderman for my area, that the new regime would unite the people more. However, if anything, the new mayor is even more divisive than his predecessor. People still side with authority figures against me all the time, and my neighbors complain about my music, even if the artist I'm listening to is a good person. I wonder if maybe the problem isn't the government itself, but the people and their ingrained attitudes about people with autism. Or maybe they don't make the right choices when voting for leaders. Unfortunately, that's what happens when people are poorly educated. I've wanted to move for some time. but I stay because I work uptown and need to be able to get to work easily, and I live very close to bus lines both to work and the Read More

The change of seasons - 8/3/2010
I have lived in Ulster County my entire life. The last 20 years in Kingston. The best part of living here is the change of seasons. It is so beautiful in the fall. The foliage is amazing! In the winter you are close to skiing and snow boarding in the Catskill Mountains. Read More

Kingston is a real city... - 5/4/2010
And this is it's year to pop!
new waterfront walkway, several new music venues and restaurants, booming art community, much more citizen action (see the Neighborhood Watch) and see kingstonhappenings.org and the main street manager project, Keegans, Sever 21, UPAC, Healthy Kingston for Kids...

And we have 3 new aldermen (out of 9) who are great!  Read More

Ripe Off for Kingston Consolidated Residence - 11/10/2009
The statistics for Ulster County compared to the rest of the country is very interesting when considering the Kingston Consolidated School Board just voted for a 3.5% increase in salaries for administration and staff. Does that board live in a fantacy world? Ulster County spends over ten thousand per student while the national average is over six thousand, a difference of four thousand dollars per student. Unemployment is over 8% for Ulster County and this board seems to think people can continue to support increases which, not only means an increase in salary but vacation pay, holiday pay, retirement, social security contribution expense, etc. I'm sure we could find thousands that would be willing to take those positions for two thirds the pay and be as qualified if not more. When will the outsourcing for these jobs take Read More

Not Such A Great Place To Live - 9/16/2009
Since moving to Kingston on October 18, 2005, the town has gotten pretty mediocre. Our Democratic District Alderman was replaced by a Republican in that year's election, and he, in turn, was replaced by another Republican in 2007. These people, along with our Alderman-At-Large, who, although a Democrat, is anti-equality, have spread so much hatred against people with developmental challenges, including myself, that the neighbors always side with authority figures, such as my parents or my apartment staff, against me, in addition to criticizing behaviors I can't help. I can't even get support from people in my synagogue. Public transit is good, but there's also so much crime that people are scared not to side with authority figures against me. Moreover, the Mayor got in a barroom fight with the wife of the Democratic candidate for County District attorney in 2007. If things don't get better soon, I might start visiting my parents down in Suffern more often. Hopefully, this election Read More

Climate - 8/21/2009
Located in Central NY 90 miles north of NYC and 45 miles south of Albany, the climate is mild. We miss most of the most severe storms, although when there is a Noreaster we will get up to a foot of snow. Summer days are typically in the 70's with higher temps during Read More

History of Kingston - 7/28/2008
Many people have enjoyed the Mid Hudson Valley, but many do not know the history of Kingston. Kingston was the first capital of the state and in the uptown area is where the stockade was built is where visitor will find most of the history. The Senate House, the Old Dutch Church and many old (pre Revolution era) homes and buildings.
The area around Kingston is known for the wonderful farms, orchards and vineyards. If you enjoy the somewhat slower pace in life the Mid Hudson area is just the spot fishing, boating, hiking, skiing are just a few things to fill your time with.
Yes, it has its trouble as all areas do and if the governing people who have been empowered to run things in that beautiful area of New York would do what they promised to be elected then things would be better for all persons. I was raised there and I long to see the people of Kingston regain their wonderful city Read More

Great Care Required After Dark - 12/28/2007
I've lived in Kingston since the fall of 2005, and, as I've discovered the hard way, you need to be very careful out and about after dark if you want to be safe and keep yourself looking good. In fact, on the night we met, I promised a young woman I found cute that, in order to look good for her, I'd avoid the convenience store after dark. Even though I just wanted to be friends with her, I feel more comfortable when I abide by my promise to her, as things have, from what I've heard, deteriorated over the past fifteen years due to IBM and several other major companies leaving, which seems to make it hard to make a living without resorting to crime or welfare. Fortunately, I'll soon be starting a temporary job cataloguing music, so hopefully, if I pay income tax, I'll be helping to improve the quality of life and bring it closer to that found in areas such as Hurley, West Hurley, and Read More

A high quality of life is possible - 12/23/2006
As a former resident of Kingston, I was disappointed to see no one had yet commented on it. I lived there from 1992-1994, with frequent visits back for a few years, but have not been there since 1998, so my observations are dated. Still, Kingston has not grown since then and is not the kind of place that changes quickly. "Uptown" at the west end of town is very old and charmingly beautiful in a genuine, organic way, not in a cute, touristy way, with high quality independent shops and restaurants. The Uptown district serves as a shopping and eating center for Kingston and many surrounding rural communities that include significant populations of retirees, refugees from "downstate" and various artists and artisans. At the other (east) end of town is the Rondout district with a marina along the Rondout creek that flows into the Hudson River a short distance away. Here too, beautiful old buildings provide the setting for more classy restaurants and shops, but with a more touristy Read More
