In order to get a better understanding of what it's like to live in Rochester, I have summarized and included user reviews from BestPlaces.net, a popular website for city reviews and rankings. 1) "Rochester is a great place to live if you're looking for a balance between city life and outdoor activities. The parks and trails are amazing and there's always something to do. The cost of living is also reasonable compared to other cities." - Sarah K.
2) "I've lived in Rochester my whole life and I can say that the winters can be brutal. But the summers make up for it with all the festivals, concerts, and outdoor events. Plus, the food scene here is diverse and delicious." - David T.
3) "The job market in Rochester is one of the best I've seen. There are opportunities in a variety of industries and the cost of living allows you to save and enjoy a good quality of life. However, the crime rate is a concern and I would advise being cautious, especially in certain neighborhoods." - Emily S.
4) "I moved to Rochester for college and ended up staying for work. It's been a great experience overall. Rising Costs - 3/1/2006
I have found it very difficult to find quality, affordable housing for families requiring a three or more bedroom unit. The only affordable housing to be found is of the least quality in the least desirable neighborhoods. Lead is also a big problem within the city of Rochester, with the most recent news report stating that at least 3 children per day in Rochester are poisoned by lead in the

Rochester - good and bad - 2/22/2006
Been here for 38 years - here's my take...
Bad:
Crappy economy. Crappy employers. 2 of the top 3 employers - a grocery store and a University. Low paying jobs. High unemployment. High crime. High pollution.
Good:
Cost of living cause everything else sucks. Best grocery store in America (one of the 2 top employers) Commute time low. Access to good health care (one of the 2 top employers).

great music - 1/22/2006
Great place for music--loads of free or almost free concerts at Eastman School of Music & other colleges/universities & other venues. Lots of amateur opportunities, too--choirs, orchestras, etc. I'm not into the jazz scene but friends say it is pretty great. Gap Mangione (Chuck's brother) lives & plays here.
Weather could be better, but lots of recreational stuff--boating, hiking,

Rochester, often called Rottenchester or RocKchester for very good reasons. This place is for people with money...and, well, that's about it. If you want a GREAT college town, head 60 miles west and go to Buffalo, NY, where there are actually places to eat after 11 at night. I've lived here for 12 years and have been violently attacked five times in white neighborhoods. It has the highest crime rate in NYS, an unprecedented number of affluent people who cannot afford one extra nice friend in their lot (God forbid they should have one extra friend.) No one holds a door for you if you're a woman. The justice system lets every criminal go... maybe they don't have enough jail space here. Who knows. I've lived all over the world and this place SUCKS. Leaving soon and can't wait. Good people beware: Rochester is no place for good, honest, loving people. Move on to Buffalo (The City of Good Neighbors)...Rochester is just a city of neighbors. They don't even shovel their own snow. If their

Mixed Bag - 1/8/2006
after living in After living in Rochester for 5 years, I can say that it is a “mixed bag” of a place to be. The weather is nice in terms of 4 season, but if you are at all fond of sunshine or vulnerable to winter depression – then you should find someplace else to live. This place gets mega dreary during the winter and really really cold. Oh – and the unpredictable lake effect snow from lake Ontario. Don’t let anyone fool you, the winters can be brutal if you’re not use to them and rough if you are.
The culture seen is great. Art, Film, Music, Festivals, Lakes, Canal, and unbelievable food are everywhere. And if you find yourself bored, Buffalo is only 1 hour away with the same benefits. Things still seem to close early though, and last call is a sad 2am in Monroe County. Oh – and speaking of drinking, the Finger Lakes are only 20 minutes away at it’s closest and they have some of the best New York State wineries. And beer is big in Rochester, with many, many local

city with a great quality of life - 12/4/2005
This is my favorie city of all that I have lived in. The cultural activities are outstanding led by the Eastman School of Music. It is home to several great universities and medical centers. One of my best vacations was piloting a barge through the Erie Canal. Lake Ontario causes snow but it also protects the city from more severe acts of nature. Cost of housing is lower than many parts of the east

Economy - 11/10/2005
After 28 years there, I agree with the bad weather!! Lets not forget the crappy economy, low paying jobs, high unemployment, very high property taxes, and last-but-not-least... pathetic property values with virtually no appreciation over 2 decades. I recently sold my house of 25 years (made appx 10% over the 25yr term) and moved to Chandler AZ. Sorry to say, I have nothing good to say about Rochester, NY....
My new build home in Chandler, AZ has increased over 20% in value in 6 months & the economy is booming here!!!
Summary:
If you live in Rochester, NY..... GET OUT NOW
If you are considering a move to Rochester, NY..... FORGET
