What BestPlaces Users Say about Asheville
Asheville, North Carolina has gained a reputation as a charming and unique city, known for its vibrant arts scene, beautiful natural surroundings, and eclectic community. Located in the western part of the state, it has become a popular destination for tourists and a desirable place to live for many people. However, as with any city, there are varying opinions on what it's like to actually reside there. Below are excerpts from four different user reviews on Best Places, offering insight into their experiences living in Asheville.
- "Asheville is a magical place that has something for everyone. Whether you're into hiking, craft beer, or live music, this city has it all. I love the friendly and accepting community here, and the beautiful mountain views never get old. The only downside is the cost of living can be high, but for me, it's worth it." - Sarah S.
- "I moved to Asheville for the art scene and was not disappointed. There are galleries and studios everywhere, and the street performers add to the creative vibe. The downside is the increase in tourism has driven up housing prices, making it difficult for artists like myself to afford to live here." - Jake P.
- "Having lived in Asheville for 10 years, I've seen a lot of changes. The good: great food, beautiful scenery, and friendly people. The bad: traffic and overcrowding. It's definitely not the small, quaint town it used to be, but it's still a great place to call home." - Emily M.
- "I've lived in Asheville my whole life and while I love it, it's not perfect. The job market can be tough, especially for young people. And the local government seems more focused on catering to tourists than improving the city for its residents. But I can't imagine living anywhere else." - Michael T.

thinking of a move - 3/4/2006
I am a 39 year old single man living in the COLD northern midwest. I'm not originially from where I live and am looking to move to an area that is more open minded, has a better climate and where there would be more opportunity to meet someone to share my live with. I am straight but not the least bit homophobic. I am in sales and would look to continue that, at least to get started. I have heard many good things about Asheville and have to say that it is currently at the top of my list for relocation. Can anyone share anything with me about life there? It scores well on this site in all the categories, but that doesn't always tell the true story. I need to make a careful choice as I am no longer a kid and I can't just pick up and go wherever I want to go.

Asheville: Was quaint, now very different. - 1/7/2006
Asheville is a beutiful mountain resort city in the heart of Western NC. Having lived here for over 35 years, I've seen it evolve from a quaint, southern, mountain town to a Bohemian, alternative lifestyle, miniature San Fransisco type city. I am not against the alternative lifestyle folks that now inhabit the city, I just miss the town I once knew and grew up in. An influx of traffic and increased cost of living has really made it hard to live here, yet, I still say it is one of the best places in the world to live. Be aware that people moving in from Florida and the Northern ststes (at a record rate) have caused the cost of living and housing to skyrocket here. Asheville is still a great city and I hope this helps you understand the way it is

The coolest place on Earth - 11/29/2005
Asheville is great. Everyone is free to do their own thing. People are active in the local government and there is a real sense on community here. Breathtaking views around every corner make it easy to appreciate this evolving community. It's a bit cold, especially Feb and March so you'll need someone to snuggle

step into the Asheville zone - 10/14/2005
Imagine stepping into an alternate place that seems nothing like the sterile cities you've seen before, with their Starbucks on every corner and rectangular skyscapers blocking the sun---instead, you see an angel painted white standing so still on a street corner, you swear she isn't a real person. There is a restaurant from almost every culture in the world. Art abounds. Bohemians flash by looking relaxed and unstressed. There are endless opportunities to get massaged or acupunctured, or to take a relaxing hike. You're in a laid back mid-sized city in the Blue Ridge Mountains called Asheville; and not only is it beautiful, it is warm and welcoming. Tourism is key here; and touring Asheville is worth the travel time. One rule: Don't try to rush through---just take it easy and
