Columbus has a high Quality of Life - 11/15/2008
I'm a lifelong resident of Columbus, and I continue to enjoy living here. I find the mix of big city ammenities (arts, sports, nightlife) and small town convenience (traffic isn't terrible, people are generally friendly) to be especially attractive.

It's important to realize that although Sperling's is trying to compare cities, it's very difficult to boil down a city as large as Columbus (population ~750,000) into a rating of a single number for example. Take the crime rate: Sperling's says it gets a "6" for violent crime although the national average is 3. This doesn't take into account the fact that there are some areas in the city that see very high crime rates, while others are extremely quiet. The area of Milo-Grogan and South Linden see lots of violence unfortunately, whereas the entire northwest side of the city is exceptionally safe.

Education is the same way. Although people tend to assume that Columbus City Schools are universally mediocre, the same Read More

Columbus - 10/4/2008
Columbus, Ohio is a fraud. Here's how corrupt Columbus, Ohio is: The Attorney General for the State of Ohio, Marc Dann was tied to the mafia!! His driver was a hit man, (killed someone in their bedroom in the Youngstown area and got less than 2 years, the judges in Youngstown are owned by the mob) and one employee of the AG was the corrupt ex-police chief from Youngstown who was fired by the Dann Administration after being caught working as a ghost employee for the corrupt City of Youngstown. Our Mayor Michael Coleman takes bribes and his wife was a ghost employee for another State of Ohio Department. She got blitzed out of her mind and smashed into several cars after blowing like three times the legal limit. All Ohio cities are funded not by their own residents but by withholdings from employees of businesses located in the city. Therefore the city allows their own citizens to be exploited by the frauds that build the skyscrapers downtown. That is to say the thieves of Read More

Depends what you want-from a native's standpoint - 9/25/2008
I have lived in Columbus almost my whole life and it really depends what you want. I agree with Robert that people are the fattest most unhealthy in country. Its like a freak show at the grocery stores. Which proves the fact that there is little "Lifestyle" and activities here. Unless your really into football (the buckeyes) there's not much excitement. There is a small art scene in the short north district which is ok. Let me be clear- the land is very flat, it is not scenic here at all. You have to go south for any good hiking/outdoor experiences. No good water either, we have a couple small lakes but their nasty. Some of the suburbs are good to raise a family (only the most expensive ones). I was raised in the schools here and most of them are below average. Northwest columbus has the best schools (Powell, Dublin, Hilliard) All richer areas.
Overall its urban sprawl and malls as far as the eye can see. If your a professional couple you will be able to afford a nice house. Read More

A few questions about Columbus...please help! - 9/10/2008
We are looking to relocate to a pretty, SAFE, family-oriented suburban town with somewhat affordable housing, good schools and friendly people and are considering the Columbus area. I would like to get some opinions on whether Columbus might be a good fit, and if so, what towns specifically in this area might be best. Any info. would be great - even if people have suggestions outside this area.Read More

Living in Columbus Ohio - 8/29/2008
I read the comments about Columbus and felt compelled to post this.

I have lived in Ohio for 20+ years, 10 years in Columbus.
I was born and raised in Canada (including Toronto), lived in Philadelphia and Dallas, as well as Columbus.

When I first moved to Ohio from Canada, I really missed many things about Canada - the lakes, the woods, the mild summers, the beauty. But after getting to know the state of Ohio, I realized there is a different kind of beauty here...maybe not as obvious as I was used to, but beautiful nonetheless.

Things I love about Columbus
1. The Metro Park system - absolutely the best. Safe, clean, large, wonderful for hiking, bird watching, great programs, progressive.
2. The People - friendly, mid-western, down to earth.
3. The Diversity - I live near OSU so there is more diversity because of the student population in the area. My husband and I love cooking a variety of cuisines and the number of ethnic Read More

Sometimes I feel like a millionaire - 8/20/2008
I recently moved from Toronto, Canada, which in terms of cost of living is comparable to say... chicago or NY city. In Toronto, as a single girl in my mid 20's, I lived in a 500 sq foot basement apt and paid $820.00 in rent alone. Tack on internet, cable, phone, parking and I was easily paying $1200.00 per month with barely enough to save or pay off school loans.

This past year (2008) I married my american boyfriend of 3 years and moved to columbus, ohio. We live in a condo community that has 2 pools, 2 club houses, a gym, and we live 2 people - comfortably in a 1 bedroom 1000 sq foot apt and pay $820.00 per mo. For the last 3 years, my boyfriend lived in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 storey town house for $800.00 per mo.
Our apt is considered upscale due to the ammenities, which is why I mention the apt my boyfriend was previously living in. You def get more bang for you buck in columbus.

Not only is the rent cheap, but the food is cheap as well. Read More

Columbus is OK - 7/30/2008
Should be our motto. Cost of living is good. Weather sucks, unpredictable-cold/humid, hot/humid....that's usually it and usually grey. Plenty to do though and lots of fun places to eat....if you can stand the Read More

Getting Around in Columbus - 3/25/2008
I have been living in Columbus for about 3 years now...give or take a few months. I have found the public transportation to be less than satisfactory. The service area is unimpressive at most, and so are the service times. I personally think that every big city should have 24 hour service. If you think that catching a cab will be a substitute, you are sadly mistaken. With gas prices saoring at an all time high these days it probably costs a fortune, not to mention, you'll be forced to rely on someone to get you around that has been in the Country less time than you've possibly been in the city and wont understand half of what you are saying. The traffic isn't bad at all, but the freways were poorly designed and the people barely know how to drive. They panic in not only snow, but rain as well, which was surprising considering this is the mid-west. Lastly, bring a reliable car with you, or get one as soon as you come because if your car breaks down, good luck finding a good mechanic Read More

It Works - 3/11/2008
I would say Columbus is an "it'll do" city. It's not a place to rave about, nor is it a place to complain about. It also has this up-and-growing feel to it. Not that it will become a mega-city anytime soon, but there seems to be encouraging signs of growth. I guess it's what people say is a small town with a big city feel.

Your satisfaction with Columbus totally depends on where you live. As a 26yr old professional I would tell anyone my age stay away from the north! Choose one of the villages. I live in the Short North and love the fact that I can walk to everything. There is a grocery store, library, tanning/laundromat, hardware store, video store, and doggy daycare all within a two block radius. I can walk to tons of cool restaurants, a movie theater, several parks, several churches, three of the summer festivals and lots of shops. All of these are within a mile and also don't require crossing any huge streets. Obviously, for me, walking is HUGE.

Your not missing a thing - 3/8/2008
There are a few leadership positions to be had in Columbus businesses by only the most elite African Americans. While the others go to uneducated white males and at any moment for any reason a African American could loose that position to an uneducated white male to whom they will pay twice as much as they paid the African American(back handed racism). This is what Columbus is made of and what the poles for the list that rank it highly for African American, miss. There is very little cultural activities for African Americans. I was born in KY and find the native African Americans here to be anti-social with a few exceptions. This is probably do to the heavy police involvement that takes place whenever they see "too many blacks" in one place at the same time.
If you want to come here, come expecting to work, there is nowhere to play. You will need to catch a flight to play. So, it is best for families with educated bread-winners. If you are not amoung the "elite Blacks", if you Read More
