Compared To Many Other Cities, Columbus Is Very Ni - 10/11/2006
How many of these other comparisons are from people who have lived in other cities? DIFFERENT cities, from different places in the country? Well I have. I've lived in Rochester (NY), San Antonio, Biloxi, Sacramento, and Columbus. Very different places. And I would take Columbus over any of those cities without a doubt. I lived in Rochester almost 20 years and I'll never go back. The economy is failing (Xerox and Kodak are from there) and the weather absolutely blows. 100+ inches of snow annually in Rochester. You can expect snow there October to April. Here in Columbus, we get around 25 inches. First snow is in December and last can be in March, but often March is very spring-like. They will close schools here for 2 inches of snow, which blew my mind at first. They just don't have the equipment to handle lots of snow, nor do they need it. Sure, they get a decent amount from time to time, but nothing like Northern Ohio and not even close to upstate NY, MI, WI, or MN.Read More

grew up there - 10/3/2006
I grew up in CMH and couldn't wait thru OSU to get out. I have lived in S. Texas for 30+ years, which has its own set of problems. Noplace is perfect, it's just a matter of what you're willing to put up with. I never could take the winters up there, nor the conservatism. However, Columbus has greatly improved since I lived there, and I still love to see the tuba dot the I at halftime. Sometimes I think about moving back to be near my family, but was a misplaced Texan while I was growing up--just didn't know what the problem was, found out on a vacation, and boogied. So far I have remained on the fence moving back to CMH, but I fly up every 6 months to see the folks. It's always great to see them, all the trees and flowers, the houses like I grew up in, the history my ancestors were a part of... I Read More

Building a network of bicycle trails - 9/20/2006
Columbus can be commended for gradually building a nice network of bicycle/walking trails. I wish they were being finished at a faster rate, but at least they have a plan and are steadily realizing the ultimate goal of an interconnected network of trails throughout the Read More

Columbus vs. Austin - 9/7/2006
I recently moved to Columbus from San Francisco. I have never lived in Austin but visited a couple times. In fact, prior to moving here, I had spent more time in Austin than Columbus. On the surface, Columbus and Austin are very similar being the home of large state universities, state capitols and similar population base. But the people are quite different between the two cities.

Frankly, I am disappointed. I was hoping that Columbus would be more like Austin. Austin, in my opinion, is much more cosmopolitan. It is the liberal bastion of Texas. It is the entertainment capitol of Texas and has KILLER live music. Austin is a lively town with people who think and question about things.

Columbus is a political uninterested town full of status quo people (again, in my opinion). It is a dull town with a lame music scene. Most bands go to Cleveland and Detroit but never make it to Columbus. People are certainly trying to make it a more artsy town, but Read More

Ann is on target - 8/30/2006

Ann too, is on target about Columbus. She gave a great description. I've been in Columbus for six years. If it were not for my extensive business travel allowing me to leave the town often, it would have been six dreary years. My home state is California, while I have also lived in North Carolina and I can say this has been the most unpleasant place I have ever lived in. The average personality you meet is pretty much like the winter weather, dreary and boring. Outside of OSU football, eating Midwestern food - bland, shopping and talking about who's got what illness, people have little to say. It's segregated in many ways between cultural groups, but that's found throughout America. The health standards are deplorable. I have yet to meet someone who hasn't talked about a friend, family member, or associate with some major disease. It could have something to do with the high concentration of obese people in Columbus. A major recreational activity is TV, couch, beer, Read More

You did not get around - 8/29/2006
Mark did not have it right. Ok, some days the weather is hot and humid, hoever there are a host of other things that make it a great city. If you look around it is an extrmemly diverse city due to the University. I can remember back in the 60's visiting the campus to see all the different cultures that were present. They ahve now moved in to Columbus and create a great melting pot of people. Add into this one of the best Art museums, a great historical museum, top ranked zoo, Pro hocky, Pro soccer and University sports. We have a wonderful orchestra, jazz clubs, blues clubs, rock and I can go on. I have lived in KC, Houston, Syracuse, Wheeling and a host of others. Columbus rates right up there. So get out and get around and experience Read More

Mark hit the nail on the head! From Cols. - 8/18/2006
Mark, you are totally correct about CMH.
I was born and bred in Cols. lived their until I was 30 and have lived in LA for almost 10 yrs. I would never go back. You are so right- weather is horrible. Unbearably humid/muggy in the summer. You MUST have AC to survive. And horribly depressing, grey, lengthy winters lasting from about NOV until sometimes May at the latest. The worst is the freezing rain. At least as many grey, rainy days as Seattle. Always "partly cloudy." Also, YOu better be into sports if you live here especially the OSU Buckeyes. The Bucks are a cultish obsession in Cols. People will look at you like you are a freak if you are not into sports (as my husband and I were not)or the Buckeyes. There really is nothing to do there except go shopping or eat out and you can tell many people there spend a lot of time eating!very few parks, terrain is flat. Very little diversity exists. People are mostly white and from the area. No hispanics at all. Few asians. Read More
