One of the 20 Most Violent Cities - The Numbers Do - 4/14/2010
The crime here is terrible and rapidly getting worse, and also spreading to the suburbs. When we moved to our suburb 6 years ago there was hardly any crime and a lot more trees. Now we hear sirens every single night, and there was a vehicular homicide right around the corner! Some parts of Columbus look like downtown Detroit, with boarded up old houses and no businesses because they are so tired of getting robbed at gunpoint. Robbery is rampant, rape is rampant (one OSU student was raped outside in broad daylight and another was stabbed in the lungs by a total stranger). We liked Columbus but are trying to get out of here because of all the Read More

Columbus is great for dining, shopping and Buckeye sports. If you like sunshine and enjoy the outdoors, Columbus is a tough place to live. You'll spend 6-7 months Read More

Better-than-Average Large Midwestern City - 1/15/2010
I moved to Columbus after grad school and have spent about 25 years here in a professional career, raised a family, etc. I have also done a lot of traveling both in the U.S. and abroad, and I have experienced many other cities and countries. By almost anyone's standards, Columbus is a clean, modern, attractive, and hassle-free city which offers good employment and educational opportunities along with a relatively low cost of living. Does it have the energy or diversity of NYC, LA, Chicago or Miami? Of course not -- it's in the middle of the Midwest, for God's sake! But it is far from dead, boring, or stifling. We have lots of good restaurants, exciting arts organizations, and job opportunities. Above average racial and cultural diversity (by Midwestern standards). A plethora of colleges and universities. A city symphony, ballet, opera, jazz, early music and chamber music groups, local drama troupes, art museum; surprisingly large gay community; Some very excellent and Read More

terrible area to live in - 11/18/2009
The home values have declined drastically and this started long before the recession. Most of the once nice apartments have gone to section 8. The crime is terrible, the gangs roam the streets at night. I got out of this area 5 years ago when I seen what was happening to the area and the type of people that were moving into this once up-scale area. Its nothing more than "the Read More

Pros & Cons - 8/29/2009
Start off with the cons: The Somalian population has been incredibly destructive towards the northern areas of the city where I live. They throw their garbage in the street, are rude to me and others everytime they are spoken to, drive very poorly, and are in the process of ruining Northland Columbus. The Westside is also to be avoided.
Pros: Columbus is a wonderful city for food, quality of life, and low crime. Although it has its bad parts, Columbus is a great American city with tons of attractions, museums and great places to shop. The High St. area near OSU is one of the best parts of town full of different kinds of foods, stores and boutiques. Columbus is a very accessible city; nothing is hard to get to, hard to find, and the majority of the people here are friendly enough. What is best about Columbus is that there is something for everyone, and for a city of its size, it is a great place to live.

Columbus, the STAR fo the state!!! - 6/8/2009
I grew up in Worthington, a suburb north of Columbus. I have lived in Washington D.C., Atlanta GA, Boston MA, NYC NY, and Chicago IL and to date, there is no place like home. Columbus may not be the most educated, creative, or free thinking place in the country but I have never met such nice, good hearted, neighborly people in my entire life! The community as a whole pulls together and there is definitely a strong sense of civic pride. The community support the arts and has one of the best library networks in the US. The zoo is top notch and the shopping is on par with a city 3 times its size. I am amazed every time I visit by how much new growth and redevelopment there is. The key to the growth is that it is not tacky or cheap looking like much of the growth in the southeastern US. Not a lot of billboards or strip centers with baptist churches in them. I know that the people take the time to get to know one another and do not pass judgement on others like they do in several Read More

Columbus is definitely a grey, cloudy town at least 70% of the year. It stays cold from the end of September til April and then it rains in May. Not enough warm weather or sunny days to satisfy my Read More

The Pros and Cons - 4/28/2009
First off I have not lived in Ohio all my life (like most people in the state of Ohio ) - and I don't mean that in a negative/positive way. Just stating a fact. So here are my pros and cons:

Pros:
Relatively safe, fairly clean, only city in Ohio that is growing, large university (OSU), very light traffic (compared to most cities)

Cons:
People are not as friendly as the South (where I grew up); the obsession with OSU football can be annoying; from my experience it seems as though people are more interested in talking about football than politics, the environment, etc; population is not very active ; city is not great for those who want to walk/bike everywhere; dining is okay - seems as though most prefer chain restaraunts (although there are some great non chain restaraunts); scenery is not great - no mountains, no ocean; seems as though most people have very similar worldviews - I grew up in an area where my worldview was challenged and I Read More

Pleasantville - Manageable family living - 11/15/2008
Let’s face it - when you have young kids, like we do, ordering Chinese food at 2AM is low on the priority list. Columbus is not exciting, there is nothing around, and the population is underwhelming. I wouldn't want to be single here. But, for affordable housing, good schools (at least in the suburbs), and convenient access, it’s pretty easy living. Newcomers will have to join in the madness for Buckeye football (or at least feign Read More
