Oberlin is a small (pop. ca. 10,000) city in Northeastern Ohio, 40 minutes west/southwest of Cleveland and 25 minutes from the Cleveland-Hopkins Airport. Its center is Oberlin College, founded in 1833 as the first institution of higher education to admit both men and women to the bachelor's course and to consider applicants without regard for race. The liberal-arts program enrolls numbers about 2,300 students; an additional 500 enroll in the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, which is a separate division of the College. Oberlin is among the 16 "most selective" colleges in the U.S.; and the Conservatory ranks at the top of music schools that specialize in undergraduate education.
