Town in it's death throes - 2/15/2018
Hines is pretty nigh inseparable from Burns...its basically the same miserable little town and overall garbage places to live. There is absolutely nowhere to rent with empty houses everywhere because the owners are desperate to sell. The weather is frigid most of the year and if you are lucky enough to actually score a place to live, the heathens that built here didn't believe in central heating...there are fire sirens at least once a month from those same people burning their houses down around their ears. The forests burn during the summer and there is smoke everywhere, if you have respiratory issues this is not the place for you! The groceries, housing, gas...pretty much everything is super expensive. The eateries are sub-par and over-priced, so if you move here learn to cook. Burns/Hines Oregon area. - 2/28/2008
Located in very rural and remote area of Oregon. Harney County is cattle country with an area of 10,000 sq. mi. and a population of about 7,000. It has some of the lowest temperatures in winter and can be quite hot in mid-summer but overall it's not bad. It's comparable to Western Pennsylvania temperature-wise but with considerably less precipitation.
Burns and Hines are adjacent to one another with a total population of about 4500. The crime rate is low and cost of housing is below average.
The populace is friendly but rather "Dogpatchish". The nearest large town is Bend, a 2 hour drive. Bend has an airport with connections to several western cities. The nearest major airport is Boise, ID about a 3 hr. drive from Burns/Hines. The area is similar to Alamogordo where I lived for 20 yrs. before coming here. There is National Forest nearby and several reservoirs for fishing within an hour or so Read More
