Many users on BestPlaces.net have shared their experiences and opinions about living in this particular place. Here are four excerpts from different user reviews that provide insight into what it's like to live in John Day.
1. "I have lived in John Day for 10 years and have loved it. The small-town feel and beautiful surroundings make it a great place to live. The people are friendly and welcoming, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. The only downside is the lack of job opportunities, so it's important to have a stable job before moving here." - SarahK
2. "I moved to John Day for a job opportunity and have been pleasantly surprised by the community. It's small, but everyone knows each other and there are always events and festivals happening. The cost of living is reasonable and the scenery is breathtaking. The only drawback is the harsh winters, but if you can handle the cold, then this is a great place to live." - OutdoorsyDad
3. "I grew up in John Day and have since moved away, but I still have family there. It's a beautiful place with friendly people, but there isn't much to do. It's a great place to retire or raise a family, but not so great for young adults. The job market is limited and the town lacks diversity." - JGordon
4. "I moved to John Day a few years ago and have never looked back. The cost of living is affordable, the scenery is stunning, and the community is welcoming. The schools are great and there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy. The only downside for me is the lack of cultural diversity, but I wouldn't trade this small town life for anything." - NatureLover123
From these user reviews, it is clear that John Day offers a close-knit community, beautiful surroundings, and affordable cost of living. However, job opportunities and cultural diversity may be limited. It appears to be an ideal place for those seeking a quiet and outdoorsy lifestyle, but may not be suitable for everyone.

If you are an active retiree, love small towns--one with all the necessary services, love the outdoors year round, and want the opportunity to be involved--to give back to others..this is your place.
We have a great up-to-date hospital, a couple of grocery stores, a variety of restaurants, several long term care facilities, hospice. Year around outdoor activities abound including hiking, hunting and fishing. The natural beauty of the John Day River Valley is sometimes overwhelming--we are are the foot of the Strawberry Wilderness and near several others, we are surrounded by Forest Service and BLM lands. Birding and Wildlife watching are daily options. John Day Fossil Beds are close by because of the unique geological history of the area (we were once of what is now the Pacific Ocean!). There are multiple opportunities for involvement and for ways to give back in this community and new voices are welcome--from the school system, to the library system, to the health care
