What BestPlaces Users Say about Salem

Salem, Oregon is a mid-sized city located in the northwestern region of the United States. It is the capital of Oregon and is known for its beautiful parks, outdoor recreational activities, and historic downtown area. With a population of over 170,000, Salem offers a mix of urban amenities and a laid-back suburban lifestyle. To get a better understanding of what it's like to live in Salem, I have included comments and reviews from four different users on the BestPlaces website.

"I've lived in Salem for over 10 years and have really grown to love this city. The cost of living is affordable, the job market is decent, and there are plenty of things to do. I especially enjoy spending time at Riverfront Park and trying out the local food scene. The only downside is the traffic can be a bit hectic during rush hour." - Maria S.

"My family and I moved to Salem a few years ago and we couldn't be happier with our decision. The schools are great, the crime rate is low, and the people are friendly. We also appreciate the proximity to Portland and the coast. It's the perfect balance for us." - John D.

"I've lived in Salem my whole life and while it's not the most exciting city, it has its charm. The downtown area is full of cute shops and restaurants, and the parks are well-maintained. The biggest downside is the lack of job opportunities, especially in certain industries." - Emily C.

"I moved to Salem for college and ended up staying after graduation. It's a great place for young adults, with plenty of social events and outdoor activities. The only downside is the weather can be gloomy and rainy at times, but it's worth it for the beautiful green landscape." - Mark L.

awesome city - 5/1/2007
Salem is so cute, it is almost a real American city but it's just too tiny to really count. Even though it's the state capitol of Oregon, everyone knows the real action and policy comes from Portland.
Salem has one of the best climates in the world. Every kind of fresh vegetable and crop grows at some point here. It's one of he most fertile areas of the United States and the best wine in the world comes fmor teh Willamette Valley. Most time you can live year round without having to buy food that's been shipped more than 250 miles. The major companies (mostly) act resposibly and respectfully towards the environment because it's been that way for years. The highest educated workforce and a lot of jobs thanks to an economy stimulated by the state being progressive ahead of the curve.
An hour away, the beaches are ALL open to the public or the mountains are open to skiing. There are public parks, state parks and National parks everywhere. You really can't go wrong in Salem - Read More

A great escape - 4/23/2007
Just wanted to say what a relaxing time I spent at the West Linn MedSpa. I was greeted warmly and the staff was very professional--Alina's graciosness and Michele's soothing massage were greatly appreciated. It was a time spent letting go of stress--could easily have taken a nap. Anyway, I would highly recommend them to everyone needs an "escape" during a busy Read More

It's a great time to buy a home... - 9/12/2006
As a realtor, I'm supposed to say "this is the best time to buy," but in truth, any time is a great time to by in Salem. I was raised here, am now raising my four children here, and wouldn't have it any other way. There are only a few small "bad" areas of town. Most neighborhoods have great parks, excellent schools, and well-kept homes. Most of us here enjoy being only 1 hour (not 2 as previously stated) from the coast, the mountains, Portland and Eugene, like to eat pizza (Salem has more pizza parlors per capita than any other city in the U.S.) and have no idea what a traffic jam is. All in all it is a great place to live! Feel free to contact me for more Read More
