Too busy, not walkable, too much police corruption - 2/11/2024
Since moving here I've had a lot of mixed feelings. It hasn't been the town that I thought it was. I moved here from another part of the suburbs seeking a better life, and I did not find it here.
Newtown is essentially an upper middle class extension of Northeast Philadelphia. It is very busy, with a massive amount of through traffic. I often nearly get hit by cars even when I have the walk light in pedestrian areas, and if I go for walks at night I can expect people to yell obscenities at me out of their car windows just for existing. As nice as Newtown Borough is with its restaurants and cafes, the odds of being manslaughtered by a drunk driver at any time of day are just too high.
Newtown is also a bit of a police state. I was recently pulled over by a cop who claimed he almost hit me while I was out walking, even though I was in a pedestrian side-of-the-road area that I had every right to walk in, and he kept me for far longer than he needed to while

Born and raised there - 23 years - 5/3/2006
Born there when I was 2 and lived there until I was 22. Since then I lived in SF, NYC and a few other places in the states.
It's a practical place to live with work opportunities in princeton, philly, trenton, ft. washinton... all within 45 min commute.
People have become snotty, disrespect is increasing, the forests and farms are being turned into homes. It's now a generic wall-mart town except for downtown.
I like my old high school, but I hear that there is a huge divide between the 2 highschools in terms of equipment, facilities, and teachers quality. That is just 2nd hand info though, but worth checking out.

I moved to Newtown Township two years ago. Downtown Newtown is a gem of a place. All historical buildings are intact, there is no garbage on the streets (literally and figuratively), the people are upper class and intelligent. Downtown stores are boutiques, most Mom and Pop, although Starbucks and the Gap have moved in. The surrounding residential and shopping areas are as nice as they come.
However, this all comes at a cost. Traffic has gotten really bad, and what was once a quaint Philadephia suburb (The movie Signs was filmed here for its country atmosphere) is now getting more congested. As in most places, farms have been replaced with McMansions, and the cost of living here has become untouchable for all but the weathiest. Rent has gone up $200 a month in two years, which would be illegal in most places, but there is a high demand here due to the Council Rock schools.
